Successful Boot but still black screen - Inspiron 15 5548

Wasn't sure if this should go in Video due to the symptoms or Gen Hardware due to the circumstances that caused it, but here goes:

My wife's backpack with her laptop fell off her chair this afternoon before coming home. She didn't think much of it because it didn't seem like a hard fall.

Nevertheless, she gets home and we've got dead video on the device.

The computer is booting up fine and seems perfectly functional (hooked it up to the TV via HDMI), but the LCD is black. The LCD is powering on/the backlight is coming on but it just doesn't seem to be getting a video signal.

I've tried power cycling but that's about it. I took the back off just to check if the LCD cable looked okay. It did, but only from a cursory look. Didn't want to delve too deep just yet. I've got a bad feeling this is beyond my ability to repair, but maybe I'm wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for posting.

Apologies that your computer isn't working as expected.

Unfortunately, it sounds as though either the gpu or the lcd has a problem.  To diagnose it further, if there is a good image on the external monitor, it's probably the LCD.  I would suggest you check the electrical connections first before suspecting the whole panel is dead.  A jolt like a fall could have dislodged the connections to the board, and may be a minor issue. 

If you are unable to check it yourself, then contact Dell Tech Support for assistance, it wouldn't be covered under warranty unless you paid for Accidental Damage Support.  They could give you an estimate of repairs over the phone.  If you are out of warranty, or it's not covered by the warranty, then contact our Out of Warranty Department or a local computer repair shop.
