Thanks for the great links. The more general question is how to control the cursor without a mouse. Any info on that subject would be appreciated.
Not the answer to my question, but the solution to the problem is to open the window: Touchpad Properties > Mouse > Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse present. Yielding: mouse -> no touchpad, no mouse -> touchpad. Piece of pie; easy as cake.
