You're installing the screen yourself?  Or did you mean they're sending someone out to replace it?

WOW - I didn't think Dell would allow that!  Did you request that, or did the Dell tech offer to do that for you?  Was it in your warranty or something?  If I'd known they would allow that, I would have asked for it, since I really don't want to send my laptop out and have to wait for it to come back.

I'm doing it myself. It doesn't seem that difficult, especially with the service manual guiding me. I just don't have time to sit around waiting for the guy to show up. It's much easier for me to just do it at my leasure. I'll let you know how it turns out..the part was shipped next day air today, so I should see it sometime tomorrow.

I also purchased my 8500 using the EPP program.  I think I will email the Dell BSD rep and ask them about this - as I'd prefer it to sending my laptop off to them! ;-)

Thanks for the info. Though changing the LCD myself is a bit daunting, but I think I can handle it.  The backlight/inverter is included, right?  Or is that 3 different parts?

I requested the parts only. When I ordered my system, I did it through the member purchase program, and I think the support may be different than standard end user support. Although, the LCD is listed in the service manual, so I assume it is considered a user serviceable part. I just got done disassembling the lcd and it wasn't that big of a deal. Took about 20 minutes with me going really slowly to make sure I didn't break anything. Now I just have to wait for the new one to show up. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's all one part. The online service manual shows you how to take it all apart. It's located here: http://premiersupport.dell.com/docs/systems/ins8500/en/8500/sm/display.htm#1001090 . It's pretty easy. Here are the tips I picked up from taking it apart tonight. First, leave the two D screws in until after you get the bezel with the power switch out. To avoid messing up the side of the computer when prying that center piece out, take the cooling fan on the bottom of the unit out first. If you look in the cavity for the fan, you will see the bottom of that bezel, and can push it up to get it started instead of prying on it. Then, disconnect the LCD cable, and take the screws out. Remove the bumpers and the screws. The bezel is tricky to get loose. I found that starting at the Dell logo works best. As you work your way around the edge, push the bezel inward. This will make the clips release easier. Then you take the screws on the side that hold the LCD in, and you're home free. Install should be easy, since getting the bezel off was the trickiest part, and you just have to snap it back on when the new one comes. Good luck!

Thanks!  I just woke up and checked my email, and here's teh response I got:

"Sir, it all depends on the specifications of the system that the customer is having as some parts are customer removable parts and some are factory removable units for which we send the technicians and in your LCD replacement case, the LCD is a CRU and that's why, we have sent the LCD and you can replace it yourself."

So yep, they've sent it to me! So did you replace your LCD yet?  If so, is the issue fixed?

LOL I don't have the CompleteCare luxury, so I'm very interested to see your results (or at least, read about them!)

As of this morning it hasn't arrived yet. I have class until 2pm today, so I am hoping it will be here when I get back. I will post back when I get it and install it. If the issue isn't fixed, I think I'm going to chuck the laptop off of the roof and claim it on the complete care!

Just got the new screen. It actually comes far more assembled than I realized. They send the bezel and everything. So all you have to do is take the two screws on the bottom loose and get the cable disconnected. Now I have to put the old one back together before I ship it back! haha. Oh well. The problem is definitely fixed, and the new screen is very nice. It's a Samsung, and it looks great. Here's a picture of it from the diagnostics. This time, the darkness on the edges is from the camera angle and only the camera angle. In person it looks great all the way across the screen. I'm happy, and I guess this means I don't have to climb on the roof and send it flying.

A Samsung?  UH OH.  The Samsung WUXGA screens had a KNOWN issue with severe burn-in.  There's a HUGE thread on it at:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_video&message.id=76469

I'd definately test it out if I were you.  Supposedly the Sharp screens are of a higher quality and a lot of people that had the WUXGA Samsung said the Sharp replacement screen they got was "brighter, more vibrant", etc.  Just a warning - it might not be an issue anymore - but I'd hate to get a Samsung screen that suffers from the burn-in problem. :-(

I will definitely check it out. The screen looks the same as my Sharp one. Poking around the forums I've seen messages that are newer than that thread that say the newer Samsung screens are about the same as the Sharp. I"ll see about the burn in though...if it's as bad as that thread suggests I'll probably notice it real quick. If it burns in the Airborne Express guy is going to be coming back to see me again. Hopefully it will all work out and I won't have to go postal on Dell or the laptop.

I too hope all is well with your new screen.  I'm eagerly waiting mine to get here, so I can see if it's a Sharp or a Samsung and what the end result will be for me! ;-)

And of course I'll post back here when I get the new one installed and what the result is.

It being a Samsung is the LEAST of my worries, actually!  Noticed this when I started getting ready to install it:

Notice the OBVIOUS warping of the plastic bezel?  it's actually about 3-4cm high and about 4" long.  Pressing down on it doesn't do anything, it warps right back out when I lift my finger off it.  I sent a reply to Dell BSD and told them of the issue, and that I'm NOT putting this one in my 8500!  They're goign to have to ship me a replacement for the replacement...and I requested a Sharp screen, as I'd like to replace the Sharp screen I've got with the exact same thing.

Just got my replacement screen delivered by DHL, and it's a refurbished Samsung screen. :-(  You're right, the whole thing is pre-assembled, and all I need to do is take the old screen off (top lid and all!) and replace it with the "new" one.  they even included a screwdriver!  Also, the instruction manual on "Replacing Your Display" that Dell included walks the user through it step-by-step.

I'm just so d*mn worried about that screen burn-in issue the Samsung displays seem to have had...well, I'm not shipping the old one back until I fully test the new one out, and I think it shouldn't take me more than overnight to run the new one thru it's paces! ;-)
