Andy,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

With the system docked, try using the System Configuration Editor to see if a problem running in the background is causing th problem.

Go to Start-Run and type in msconfig and hit enter.  The System Configuration Editor allows you to choose what loads as the system boots.  Choose Diagnostics startup and hit ok.  Say yes to reboot.  When the system boots up you will see the boot menu, make sure that Normal mode is highlighted and hit enter.  The system will now boot without loading any of the configuration files shown in the System Configuration Editor.  Please use the system like this and see if the problem happens again.  If it does not, then  you can use the System Configuration Editor to determine which file is causing the problem.

Remember that in most cases, the System Configuration Editor is a troubleshooting tool, and not a solution.

If that does not help, then try deleting the the docked profile, while undocked, and then shutdown, redock and reboot.  Windows will recreate teh docked profile.

Thanks for the tips.

i found that deleting the docked profile didn't help but running in diagnostics mode did.  now i just need to sort through which of the many things loaded at startup is causing the problem.

i'll update this when (if) i find the culprit.

edit: the Workstation and Server services both cause this problem, if either of them is running the mouse stutters and the CPU bounces.  if they are both disabled the mouse functions fine and the CPU idles as expected.

edit: i've nailed it down .  the problem was i had the NetBIOS protocols installed and those protocols had trouble when both ethernet cards (the built-in one on the laptop and the one on the dock) were enabled.  i set the card in the laptop to be disabled in the docked profile and turned the above-noted services back on and reinstalled the NetBIOS protocol for the network connections and everything's normal now (whew!).

a.s.
