Got the same problem. My laptop came back from repairs yesterday, motherboard and processor died and now my video is terrible. Flash movies run slow, games run slow...and i do not even think about running a benchmark to see that a 3.06 Ghz with a Geforce fx 5200 runs slower then my 4 year old laptop.
Got problem with slowdown too.My Inspiron 5150 only 1 week old. Every 2min. there is a 5-10 sec slowdown that effects every application on my laptop. That includes DVD/CD playback, page scrolling, picture downloading and saving ,typing,Web surfing and more.
I've been experiencing the exact same problems when running graphic-intensive applications, mostly 3d accelerated games and demos, but now after the last bios-upgrade (to the a30(?) i think) even 2d-graphic intense apps like photoshop and macromedia flash keeps slowing down the computer a lot, alot more than they did before atleast, now it even hangs after about an minute! :/
it isn't funny working with such a computer anymore...
I’ve experienced the same problems, and sometimes the system will freeze altogether. I’m positive that it’s not happening when there are too many applications, as it happens when there is only one application running. I’ve also noticed that it only happens when using DirectX applications, such as DVD playback and games, not on the desktop or while word processing etc.
I’m able to use the system all day for desktop (AKA 2D) applications, but as soon as I try anything 3D, such as a game, the system will run for a few minutes, then begin to slow down, return to normal for a few moments, slow down a few more times before finally locking up altogether.
Corrective actions I’ve taken so far:
Reformatted the system and installed both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Installed every iteration of the video driver ever released by Dell Tried 16 and 32 bit color depths Removed all external (USB) devices from the system Tried multiple application settings (Low Texture Quality, etc)
None of these have had any effect on the problem whatsoever. I believe I’ve isolated the problem to the GeForce 5200go video card as an identically configured Insperon 5100 with an ATI Radeon 7500 can run all the games and playback DVDs with no difficulty.
If your machines run fine while playing 3D games or doing any 3D applications for a while before slowing down. Then it is heat problem. This is confirmed as I am also experiencing this problem. There are a few alternatives as suggested in the forum:
1) Get a can of compressed air and spray into the heat sink....which helps most users
or
2)Call dell to have them either replaced the fan assembly or clean that area.
or
3) what I am doing is the most extreme measure; to take out the keyboard and expose the cpu and video to ventilation, i have tested it and have no problem of slownesss. Do note, I have a external keyboard so taking out the dell keyboard does not hinder me in any way. This is a cheaper alternative as there is no need to buy compressed air cans, but the solution is only tempoaraily, ultimately when the laptop need to be on the road, it becomes very troublesome to put back everything in place.
Also, if you would like to confirm if it is heat, install Fangui and monitor the temperature of the cpu.
To bad it ain't solving my problem, even with a cpu at 38C it still runs slow. maybe the chipset of the motherboard is slowing everything down, or direct draw maybe..S Somebody help. Running Max payne 2 at 11 fps on a 3.06 Ghz Geforce fx 5200 machine is irritating
Tnx
ow, and i mailed the dell tech support 3 days ago, still no awnser
interesting, my problem is isolated to 3d applications and direct x as well. I just e-mailed tech support and will see what they say. I have heard that the 5150 does have issues with overheating and will check that. Thanks.
I must say that using the fan-tool forcing fan 1 to be turned on at full speed all the time works well, combined with placing the back of my laptop on something and not flat on the table, no sudden freezes or problems any more... now the fan-noise is the only irritating.
I'll have to try the compressed air trick later, i'm guessing that might be appropriate because some forum-posts say that the fans get filled with dust after 2-3 months, i've been using this computer for 5-6 months now...
