Alienware 18 sound issue

Question

A while back I had a problem where whenever I plugged in a USB device, the sound playing would sometimes get slightly clearer or muffled, and then it would reverse when I unplugged it. I had some other problems that led me to do a clean install of windows 7 and then re-install all of the drivers which initially fixed this problem, but now it's happening again. My communications option is set do 'do nothing' as well. Anyone else with this problem?

Is the problem affecting all USB ports in the laptop? Does it happen when you connect any kind of USB device? If you connect headphones or external speakers, does it also affect the audio through them?

I never notice it happen when I have my headphones in. It seems like it only affects the laptop speakers, but it doesn't happen every time so I can't tell for sure.
