Alienware X51 Random Shutdown
Hi all.
I have a week old X51 with i7 and AMD R9 270x GPU. Had issues with the GPU where it would go to a black screen on boot or while running. Tech came out and replaced the GPU and that problem went away immediately. Now having a new issue. Computer will just randomly shut itself off without warning. No shutdown, just turns off like the plug has been pulled. It seems to occur at random but oddly enough it did not occur anytime i was running WoW on max settings. Strange. Started when I attempted to play a blu ray and then happened again just doing an email and updating some software. I have checked and seen some solutions as follows:
-possible wires need to be moved away from fans
-use MSI Afterburner to increase GPU fan speed
-Use Speed Fan to increase system fan speeds
-possible BIOS issue
-some sort of driver issue
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
Do you have any records of the CPU and GPU temperatures? If not, download HWmonitor and check the temperatures on idle and during stress. Post the results on your reply.
I would also recommend you run an ePSA test and AlienAutopsy to check for hardware errors.

Yes, the PCIe gen 3 can cause video stability problems. Go to the BIOS/Advanced/Integrated Devices and disable it.
Let me know when you've confirmed the temperatures and test results.

Last night I installed MSI Afterburner and Speed Fan. After some configuring temps came way down. Ill post some test results when I am home and at get some solid numbers. I do recall seeing some CPU temps higher than they should be before adjusting fan settings and after running a Blu Ray or playing a game some GPU temps of 80-100c. This was before adjusting using speed fan but with Afterburner running. After adjustment all temps looked much better.
This morning started the unit and it went back to the black screen issue on start up (this is now with a technician-replaced GPU). Restarted, did ePSA check and it started up fine. I have the AMD R9 270x and saw in another forum that I should disable the PCIe gen 3 mode in the BIOS for this setup to work properly. Could this be at the root of my troubles?

I am having the exact same issues. Purchased the Alienware X51 R2 and its only been up for a week. The system WHILE I am using it goes into Standby/Shutdown mode.

Thats exactly what mine appears to do but it powers off completely. Still having the random black screen on boot or even during idle operation. Odd thing is it hasnt black screened on me during a game...weird. All my hardware checks out on every test I know to run so Im assuming its got to be a software issue; been seeing lots of posts like this with multiple different hardware setups. One consistent seems to be the i7 processor. I know someone with the i3 and no issues like this.

Hi pwradmin,
If the system goes through the whole Windows shutdown stage, it could be a software problem.
If not, I recommend you follow the troubleshooting steps I posted above: check the PCIe-gen3, temperatures, make sure you have the latest BIOS A04, run the hardware diagnostics and let me know the results.
