Krista try this to see if you have your driver installed correctly, go to start then right clickk on my computer then click on  then click on properties.then click on hardware, then click on device manager. Look to see if there is a yellow question markl by the keyboard. If not it's installed ok.   Call Dell Like i just did and they will have u send it in for repair if you have the warranty on it. good luck.

Users:

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Users:

  1. Remove the system from the docking station, if applicable.
  2. Determine if there have been any recent hardware or software configuration changes.
  3. Disconnect external peripherals.
  4. Upgrade to or reinstall the latest touchpad drivers.
  5. Flash / Upgrade the BIOS.
  6. Change the sensitivity settings for the pointing device.
  7. Apply pressure to the right of the touchpad.
  8. Disable the touch-pad.
    • Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    • Double-click the Mouse icon.
    • The Mouse Properties window appears.
    • Click the Device Settings tab.
    • Click to highlight Pointing Stick and click Disable.
    • Click OK.

Further troubleshooting ideas can be found in this knowledgebase article.

One more idea, often third-party mouse drivers can cause performance issues with the system's touchpad. If you are using an external mouse and it requires additional drivers, I would suspect that these drivers are likely conflicting with those for the touch-pad. You should remove the drivers for both pointing devices and then reinstall those for the mouse that you wish to use.

Hi - I am having a related problem with my inspiron8200.

My hands may be nowhere near the keyboard, touchpad, or mouse, and words will appear on my screen.

They are "real" words - they, boat, then, - sometimes a whole phrase will show on the screen.

Also, at times, I am typing and nothing shows on the screen.

This started about 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Disabling the pointing stick, a vital part of the laptop computer, should not be required. However, it is the only 'fix' that will cure the jumping cursor problem on my Inspiron 8200. What is Dell doing to remedy this defect for laptops that are still under warranty?

I've always had similiar problems with my 8200 keyboard; recently tried to trouble shoot the fix.

I saw on the forum that you can disable the touch screen but even with the USB Kensington mouse

unplugged the XP Home Ed. doesn't display these parameters

Can anyone help?

You can disable the pointing stick ONLY if you have the Alps touchpad driver loaded. This is the original driver that came with your Dell laptop. If you no longer have this driver, you can get it from the Dell downloads area. The Catch 22 is that your third party mouse may not work properly unless you have ITS driver active (instead of the Alps touchpad driver). I would like to see a Dell representative address this dilemma.

Since we didn't hear from the moderator on this, I'm going to the support group.  Got a few months to go on this extended warranty and I'm going to get this solved without or with an exchange of notebook computer.

joeearl, let us know what happens. It's too bad we can't get straight answers from the moderator of this forum.

I guess I should restate my problem - my cursor will jump to anywhere's it wants to on the page.  "thank goodness it doesn't type real words like ghost writer.

I'm currently working with the help desk in India but so far with 2 cycles of back and forth notes, I haven't been able to get them to focus on the real problem.  I've trouble shot(it just jumped 2x during this short phrase) conflicts in devices, I've tried to find out how to diasble the touch pad thinking that might be it, and followed theier recommendation for troublesome keyboards but I don't think this applies.  Will try getting rid of this USB Kensington mouse, pulling the battery out, and then rebooting with the mouse to see if this helps.  Apparently the docking station is also a culprit but although I have one, I stopped using it months ago since it affected my remote printing.  Will let you know if I come to the end of this resolution. I'm afraid it may be a new system but I don't want to start over (even tho I have an exteral drive backup)

I had 4 cursor moves during this note!

Sorry an exchange didn;t help you out. Did you have a choice or had to stay with the 8200?

I shut the system down, removed the mouse, removed the battery, started up with no AC power on, battery only and worked with the built in touch pad and stick and found the number of cursor skips much reduced.  In fact I thought I had solved it when I did get one skip in a couple of paragraphs.

Apparently some major flaw with the hardware or the drivers...the notebook is getting a spurious interrupt depending on how you flex the keyboard.   I don't think I'm going to get used to the touchpad, my next trouble shooting step is going to be a non USB mouse, back to mouse balls, and I'm going to remove the drivers.

The docking station s (a word that begins in S and ends in KS) also, since it only exacerbates the problems you have with drivers and hardware.  Aghhhh!

I like my laptop but right now I having a fit with it when I'm typing notes.   Right now I'm on a neighboring W98 Workstation Dell 400 in my office, that's a good ole workhouse, keyboard is solid, no jumps, unless you need portability forget the lap tops.

For another writer, I have XP Home, Windows Office (Using Outlook Express), LAN connected to router, DSL line, etc.

Does anyknow if we have the ALPs or the Synaptic touch pad?  Seems someone on the list mentioned that a while back.

I can't seem to find new touchpad drivers in the download area.  Can anyone help me?

Joeearl

In Word, go to "Tools", Speech and deactivate the speech feature. You might also want to mute the mic when in Word. You can do so by double clicking the volume icon in the task bar and checking the mute box for the mic. Or go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Volume, and then Advanced. From there check the mute box for the mic.
