Where does it fail - on the BIOS screen, or loading Windows?

If on the BIOS screen, CTRL-ALT-D and test the hard drive.

If when loading Windows, is your antivirus and firewall software up to date, and are you up to date on Windows critical patches?

Reseat the memory modules, and any mini PCI cards or PCMCIA cards in the system.  If that doesn't do the trick, call Dell - the system needs repair.

Many new 8600s, including mine, have been having this exact same problem.

Design flaw, maybe?

See I'm not alone with this problem. Are Dell people aware of this? Any known fix?

At what screen does it hang up? if it locks up in the WinXP screen then just dies out... here's what to do:

Remove the Ligthpipe or center control cover (its where the power button is.. colored blue strip of plastic) then turn on your computer. If it goes into windows fine... then call DELL and have them replace the Lightpipe. The 8500 and 8600 have the same issue. There was a mistake in the design of the location of the power button on these systems. So what Dell did, they created a new design of the lightpipe that the chip in it that controls the power button will not affect the LCD and booting process of the system.

If your system locks up in the BLUE DELL LOGO, have BIOS FLASHED, reseat the memory and also try removing the CDROM.

If you dont see anything at all but the power light is lit, then remove all CRU's (Customer removable Units) which are: Hard Drive, CDROM, Memory, Mini-PCI cards, PCMCIA cards...

Since i've updated the BIOS from A04 to A08 Friday 27, no more trouble, it seems it is the solution, in my case :-)

If it does not start, even after you flash the BIOS, then you may have a faulty motherboard.

Goto the Diagnostics program and run a Processor test, my results came up with the L2 Cache failing.

had the trouble again .... :-/

the solution i found was to use a screwdriver to raise the blue plastic around the start button, for 3-5 millimeters.

i'll try it if it does it again, but try and tell us if it's efficient. ;-D
