How to change video compression/expansion for a Mobility Radeon 9700

In the Read the FAQs before posting. I found the problem that I'm having, but the fixes do not appear to apply to the ATI Mobility Radeo 9700.  I would appreciate any help! Q:How do I add or remove the black border around the screen? A: If a resolution is used which is lower than the maximum (optimal) resolution your LCD is capable of displaying, the fonts may appear blocky or blurry and difficult to read. Your video driver allows for the video card to display such a resolution in a compressed format. By placing a black border around the outside of the screen, fonts will become smaller but readable. To toggle from this Compressed Mode into the larger Expanded Mode press the Fn and F7 keys at the same time. If your Inspiron uses the NVIDIA GeForce2 Go video adapter, and pressing the Fn and F7 keys does not resolve the issue, follow the procedure below: Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears. Double-click the Display icon. Open Display Properties, and go to the Settings tab. Click the Advanced button. Click on the Geforce XX tab (where XX is your video card) Click the Device Settings button and click Screen Adjustment. The screen should now be stretched to cover the entire LCD, regardless of the resolution.

I hate finding the answer after posting for help. After seeing that there have been numerous issues with the Black Border symptom, I found a fix that actually worked for my version of the problem, posted by Brian Aldrich, listed below.

actually, i found how to fix it. turns out omegacorner does address it:

1- Make sure you monitor is identified as Plug & Play or WinXP is using your Monitor driver.
2- Right Click an empty space in your desktop and click PROPERTIES, in the display properties, click the followings: SETTINGS, ADVANCED, DISPLAYS, MONITOR. Click PANEL. On monitor attributes, click scale image, and choose one of the two choices (retain ratio, stretch regardless.)

this fixed my problem, hope it fixes yours.

hrmm... I've done this, but everytime i reboot (maybe even out of standby/hibernate; not sure), it is reset back to "Expand to full panel size"

Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, seemed to work for WarcraftIII in 1024x768, 1600x1200, but not 1280x1024 ..
1280x1024 would still be expanded to full size/distorted.

I just bought an Inspiron 9100, recv'd this week.. so I'm still running the Dell factory-installed drivers.
