I had the same problem, with the same computer and a maxtor external drive.

After installing a small program from the 'download' site from dell, the problem is solved.

I think it should be R56407.EXE.

Good luck

Why don't you create an image file on another partition of your HD, then burn that image file to your drive?

Did you let Ghost create the bootable floppies?  If so, the Iomega file guest.exe should load the aspi1394.sys DOS firewire driver before Ghost actually runs.  You won't see the external firewire drive in DOS without this driver being loaded.

Here is an example of what the AUTOEXEC.BAT should contain:

@echo off
lh mouse
lh guest
ghost32 -auto -fis -fx

Here is an example of what the CONFIG.SYS should contain:

dos=high,umb
devicehigh=aspi1394.sys /int /all

The contents of the bootable CD using Ghost 8.0 for imaging to my external firewire drive:

aspi1394.sys
AUTOEXEC.BAT
COMMAND.COM
CONFIG.SYS
GHOST.EXE
guest.exe
IO.SYS
MOUSE.COM

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Luphy, I have no other partitions on my built-in HD, the computer came with only 1 partition (well, 2 if you count the Dell diagnostic partition, which is very small).

My autoexec is listed below: the original one (which also doesn't work) did not have the r56407.exe line and the echos around it. DOS complains that r56407.exe "cannot be run in DOS mode", even though Dell says it can on its download page. Wim Poort, can you tell me how you run r56407.exe? I have not modified config.sys, even though Dell makes some cryptic references to it on the r56407.exe download page.

*** begin AUTOEXEC.BAT

@echo off
SET TZ=GHO+05:00
echo running r56407.exe
r56407.exe
echo ran r56407.exe
GUEST.EXE
MOUSE.COM
echo Loading...
cls

if %config% == FROMFLPY goto FLPYBOOT
if %config% == FROMCD goto CDBOOT

goto FAILED

:FLPYBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
pause
if exist a:\ghost\ghost.exe goto GHOSTFND
goto FLPYBOOT

:CDBOOT
echo Insert Ghost boot disk 2 (containing Ghost.exe)
pause
if not exist b:\ghost\ghost.exe goto CDBOOT
b:
goto GHOSTFND

:GHOSTFND
cd \ghost
echo Loading...
GHOST.EXE
goto END

:FAILED
echo Unknown boot menu selection
goto END

:END

*** end AUTOEXEC.BAT

*** begin CONFIG.SYS

[menu]
menuitem=FROMFLPY, This computer was started from a Ghost boot disk
menuitem=FROMCD, This computer was started from a Ghost bootable CD

[FROMFLPY]

[FROMCD]

[COMMON]
DEVICE = fwr\aspi1394.sys /int /all
LASTDRIVE = Z

*** end CONFIG.SYS

When the original AUTOEXEC.BAT is run (without the r56407.exe), the following msgs are displayed:(approximately, from memory)

*** start messages

(Iomega banner)

found ID0 = 54058H8 Maxtor

Iomega guest driver v1.5

no drive letters were added

*** end messages

note the last message. The Maxtor firewire drive is not seen by DOS. Is DOS running out of drive letters in spite of LASTRIVE=Z?

My A: files (1st Ghost disk) are AUTOEXEC.BAT, MOUSE.INI, CONFIG.SYS, MOUSE.COM, guest.exe, MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, FWR/aspi1394.sys, GHOST/(empty)

for some reason, XP doesn't let me see AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS under Explorer (I do have 'show hidden files' set), I have to copy them to temp files uder DOS (not listed above), reboot and edit them under XP, then reboot again... aargh.

Any comments would be appreciated...

thanks,

Sy

If you run Ghost2003 from within WinXP and choose the option to load Firewire drivers, it should reboot into PCDOS and load the appropriate driver - including assigning the drive letter.  Obviously make sure the driver is plugged in and on before Dos loads up.  If that still does not work...well, then it might be the driver itself or the drive itself.  You can always try to find a different firewire driver for Dos and find one that works for your drive.

To see certain system files, you have to enable viewing of system files (not just enable viewing of hidden files) to be able to see Autoexec.bat and such.

I'm not sure what r56407.exe is - but I'm assuming that's an update program.  Not all updates released by Dell are meant to be run under Dos...it might be designed to run only under Windows.  Not sure why Dell says it can (you sure you downloaded the correct Dos version?)

I'd recommend splitting your drive up into at least 2 partitions - your main partition, and another to keep a copy of your Ghost image of your main partition.

@sybernut

ghost can direct access the scsi aspi interface aspi1394.sys provided. just start ghost, you will see your external disk. you don't need any dos drive letter,  ghost can direct write and save image to any supported partition(FAT and NTFS).

It seems to me that you do need a drive letter to save as an image file.

Correct me if I'm wrong but how can I tell Ghost what what to save the image file as when the Ghost file selection box doesn't show drives without drive letters?

With my Inspiron 8100, the Aspi1394.sys driver recognizes my Firewire external HD but Guest.exe fails at assigning it a drive letter.

Any ideas how to make Guest.exe assign a drive letter? when it runs I just get the message "No drive letters were added".

Thanks, Wade

PS I'm using Ghost 2003

I was finally able to access my Firewire external HD with Ghost.

I had to remove the MAXTOR EZ-BIOS that was installed on the HD.

When I did, GUEST.EXE was willing to assign a drive letter to it.

EZ-BIOS is MAXTOR's version of utility software that comes with most modern Hard drives.

It allows older computers to access the higher capacities of modern Hard drives.

You usually have to boot from the floppy that came with your HD to set it up or remove it.

You can also usually get the utility from the HD manufacturer's website.

I hope this helps somebody, it took me 10 hours to figure it out.

Precious little information sometimes....

My System:
Inspiron 8100
XP Pro
Ghost 2003

Hey, thanks all for your help and info.  Someone else was kind enough to provide a working solution.

Meantime, caught some trojans.... found out the hard way that XP firewall doesn't intercept unauthorized outgoing net accesses.   Cleaned it up and finally have my computer up to scratch with latest anti-virus, ghosting, better firewall, etc

regards,

Sy

In order to get an external firewire Maxtor drive to boot with a ghost bootdisk you sohuld do the following.  Download R56407.EXE from the dell website. Then run that program in windows and it will extract two files: extcd.sys and version.txt.  Have Ghost creat a bootdisk with usb and firewire support.  Once that is done, copy the extcd.sys to the bootdisk.  You now need to edit the autoexec.bat  and config.sys files. My files look like this with the changes i made to them in bold:

Autoexec.bat:

@echo off
mscdex.exe /e:extcd001 /m:15 /l:r
SET TZ=GHO+05:00
GUEST.EXE
MOUSE.COM
echo Loading...
CD GHOST
GHOST.EXE

config.sys:

DEVICE = usb\aspiohci.sys /int /all
DEVICE = usb\aspiohci.sys /int /all /D1
DEVICE = usb\aspiohci.sys /int /all /D2
DEVICE = usb\aspiohci.sys /int /all /D3
DEVICE = usb\aspiuhci.sys /int /all
DEVICE = usb\aspiuhci.sys /int /all /D1
DEVICE = usb\aspiuhci.sys /int /all /D2
DEVICE = usb\aspiuhci.sys /int /all /D3
DEVICE = fwr\aspi1394.sys /int /all
device = extcd.sys /e:extcd001
LASTDRIVE = Z

just add those two lines into your files someplace and it should recognize your drive. The /e: is just what drive letter dos will assign the external drive to, you can change that to whatever you want.
