Thanks for the suggestions, all.

First, I did try another DVD player in Windows Media Player 9, although I'm not sure if that' s a valid test.  Same effect.

Second, I defragmented the hard drive and that also made no difference.

As far as programs running in the background, nothing abnormal showed up.  I do have the laptop connected to the internet via a wireless connection, and wonder if this constant internet connection may have an effect?  I have a RSS program that retrieves feeds (PluckSvr.exe) while connected.  Other than that, everything checks out.

Thanks,

Mike

I wouldn't call WMP9 a decisive test.... its not tat good at all for DVDs. Try another, or reinstall Power DVD again.

Set your power options to Portable/Laptop, see if it helps.

Upgraded to PowerDVD 5.0, but still saw the same thing.

Tried a different DVD, but that wasn't it, either, thanks.

Just switched the power setting, which was set to 'Always On', to Portable/Laptop.  What's the thinking behind this?  (although it just did it.)

Thanks everyone,

Mike

A setting like max battery will give choppy playback, not your problem however.

pine is close....

i'm pretty sure its the power save option on the NVIDIA propertys , in display , set it at max performance ( no battery save ) , also verify your CPU speed , if you have intel speedstep...( not sure of the name for this apps )
