micmens,    I'm not of much help to solve your problem, but when you presented your fact collection you mentioned :

"a PCMCIA CompactFlash adaptor....."

The fifth thing is because I feel the problem mainly occurs after having used any PCMCIA card (modem, network, anything...) within the Win session and that CF adaptor doesn't come with drivers for it uses a "standard W98SE IDE hard drive driver". So "installing" this device is not likely to cause additional troubles.

A CF card adaptor can never harm in so far, that there is not a single component inside !

It is just a wired extender to adapt the CF cards.  These in turn contain an ATA disk adaptor, which is a standard unit with no additional drivers required in most OS...

have a nice day,                    flortep

Hi flortep,
OK, I didn't mention that I didn't use an empty adaptor but one with a CF card inserted...

W98SE needs drivers for those cards, but it takes any W98SE standard IDE driver, so no extra driver exactly belonging to the card is needed.

Hi Donnie50,

I found that update here and see, whether it will help. But I feel it is more a problem with systray.exe and not really a shutdown problem.

Hi,
now I hered that W2k was quite hard to install & configure and that it doesn't play mm contents as fluently as W98SE, is that right?

I prefered to get a solution for my crazy problem instead of buying to new OSes and installing everything twice again, if anybody could give me some information?

Meanwhile I'm quite shure I don't have any ShutDown problem at all but "just" a problem with systray.exe which hangs very often when trying to close it.
What has systray.exe to do with the 2 PCMCIA-slots? And why is it so difficult to close systray, why does that take so long even if it works? What happens during it's closing process? Should/can I update systray.exe itself or what files does systray work together with, that should be updatet?
I never had that problem before reinstalling W98SE (because of an USB problem)!

Thank you

Micmens,

I found the following and it may help.
I totally forgot about this web page as well.
WINDOWS SHUTDOWN & RESTART CENTER TROUBLESHOOTING in 15 STEPS.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
When you start Windows, your computer may stop responding (hang) after the desktop loads if Systray.exe is enabled in the Startup group.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to change the following registry values:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\SysTray\Services
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\SysTray\Services
In both values, change the hexadecimal data value from 8 to 7.

I know this article states "When you start windows", but you may want to try this
registry tweak anyway.

Hello again,
now I'm running both machines without systray (deactivated using msconfig) for about two weeks now and didn't have that problem any more. So I'm quite sure this is really caused by systray.exe and the only reason for having a problem shutting down the machine is that it is not possible to close systray - and this has to be done during shutdown, of course.

And I found that systray.exe contains the "remove hardware" icon that appears in the sys tray when inserting a PCMCIA card. So systray really has anything to do with the PCMCIA slots (what I thought all the time)?

So does anybody know which version of systray.exe is the best for W98SE and with what files (dll's, etc.) it works together and which versions of those files should be used?

Of course I could go on using the machines without systray, but then I don't see the battery capacity or whether the power adaptor works. And it is easier to remove hardware with that systray icon.

Thank you

Still didn't get help and didn't find a solution...
There is one additional thing I noticed and didn't mention yet:
There is that typical sound when inserting a PCMCIA card or taking it off. This sound has been really loud all the time before and is very low now on both machines. I can't tell for sure whether this is really since the same time I became that systray problems but could be.

Perhaps any ideas about that or does/did anybody have this effect?

Thanks again.

Micmens,

Is the following correct?
Systray locks up when the CF card is installed.
If the card is not installed, the system shuts down properly.
If you have another PC card install, the system shuts down properly.

What is the brand/model of the CF card?

Hi DELL-Karell,
unfortunately this is not true, but thanks for answering!

The main information about my problem can be found here:
systray stops WIN98SE when shutting down 09-30-2003 04:26 PM
don't think it's the drivers 10-03-2003 11:26 PM
same problem with any hardware now 10-08-2003 05:11 PM

The only reason for using that adaptor for my tests is that I didn't want to bring in a new "critical" component that could cause it's own problems:
This adaptor is a PCMCIA device that doesn't need external drivers and can be used with the built in W98SE drivers.

And the problem is about the same with any PCMCIA device. Perhaps this could be a hint:
problem with systray and PCMCIA slots 11-23-2003 08:40 PM?

Thanks for any ideas!

Hello DELL-Karell,
I really did it now - upgraded to W2k!

And it helped in a few ways as far as I saw, but I have new problems...
While installing Dock Quick Install using the file R39818.EXE that was offered following your link, I got an error message without any text. And when I docked for the first time later, W2k didn't find the driver for the built in Network Device. I tried out some drivers I found within the DELL download section, but they all didn't work.
At the place R39818.EXE is offered there is this information, but I don't really know what to do with it:

Fixes and Enhancements
1. Change to new release of 3COM driver - v4.15 2. Inital release of the enhanced CMD driver for Windows 2000 only - v2.0.6

Where to get what? 4.15.2 or 2.0.6? What is CMD?

Sorry for bothering here, I already posted all this at Latitude : Port Replicators some days ago, but there was no reply yet. And after formatting the drive because of all that trouble I described there (svchost trouble and no internet access before throwing away the whole installation) I'm waiting to install W2k a second time now...

Hi again,
is there anybody with experience using a CPiA running W2k in a C/Dock II?

What drivers did you use/where did you get them?

Thank you!!

the filename is R39818.EXE. If that doesn't work, as you stated, then there's nothing else that I could find. You could try deleting your docked profile and installing it again. Worth a shot.

Hi jwark,
thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't help but led into really hard trouble.

OK - I did it, although last time I had to throw away the system afterwards and reinstall W2k...

And it went exactly the same way as the times before:

  1. I ran the R39818 setup. When it showed 100% I got an empty vbOkOnly + vbInformation message box (no text).
  2. I restarted Windows, nothing happened.
  3. I docked the machine, some new hardware was found and installed.
  4. Then I got a message that an unknown device "ethernet adaptor" was found and I was asked to enter the location of the corresponding driver.
  5. I gave the location where I saved the files I downloaded at 3com and got a warning message that the driver was not signed by MS.
  6. During all that procedure I was never asked to restart the machine but the 3com device wasn't shown before I did so.
  7. Then I had access to the network but my internet access was killed, exactly as before reinstalling W2k:
I get response when I send a ping to the IP of a web server, but when I enter "http://" and the same IP in the browser adress bar I get a "not found" error. And my mail clients can't connect as well.
  8. I uninstalled the 3com adaptor but that didn't help, I still don't have internet access anyhow anymore.
  9. I deleted the docked profile, didn't help.
  10. I used the hardware wizard to uninstall every driver that might have been included in that bad R39818 set and restarted Windows, but it didn't help.

Right now svchost.exe is still fine, but without internet access I can't use the machine!

Can anybody please, please tell me how to cancel the C/Dock installation so that my system is as it was before? And where can I get the right driver for the C/Dock II?

I have a real lot of special software that is not easy to configure and it takes me about 20 hours each time to reistall the system and I really wouldn't want to do that a third time now!

Please help, thank you very much!!

Hello,
I think I found the solution now:

Tried any combination of chronological order installing VirusScan 7.00.5000, Dock Quick install and docking the machine the first time:

When running Quick Install with VirusScan uninstalled, setup completes without that blank message box.

And when docking first time with VirusScan uninstalled, internet access is still OK afterwards.

And it's no problem to install VirusScan again after that.

I'm using McAfee AntiVirus so many years now and never had problems like that, and I didn't have that problem with C/Dock using W98SE before...

March 20th, 2004 11:00

Unfortunately it seems as if it was exactly the other way round: All that installing and removing software made it possible to install the C/Dock quick install without errors, I guess?

I have two equal CpiA systems and on both of them I installed W2kSp4 prof. instead of W98SE now, following the advice I got right here in this thread. I just did that with the second machine rightnow and theefore there isn't any anti virus software intalled yet but nevertheless I just got that empty error message when running the Quick Install setup!
I still have internet access now, but I really don't dare to dock that machine now:
I'm shure that W2k won't find the built in network adaptor then and when installing it seperately internet access will be destroyed.

Please help!
How can C/Dock II be installed under W2kSp4 prof. without all that problems, how can that be done??

Thank you!
