What "XP Handholding" are you referring to?
If by that you mean install the .dlls and what not to win\system32 that's easy,
even getting the right registry stuff in isn't difficult... but unless things have changed there are deep system parts after that I just don't want to delve into.

Try drivers from omegacorner.com.

I have. They've been a worthless excercise in killing my system as I completely removed all the ATI stuff because it first bombed on a 'try installing basic VGA driver' and now it bombs on an "INF can't find driver" then tells me to try a basic VGA again. Yuck.

You can get around that by installing the drivers and not letting XP do the hand-holding. Click on you will install the drivers manually.

But otherwise, Omega Drivers aren't the greatest IMO. They have issues with Battlefield 1942 textures dissapearing (and possibly other games that I dont know about).

I use the latest Dell 600m drivers.

??
do you mean run setup.exe instead of the Windows wizard?
Puhlease, who /does/ use the wizard when an .exe is provided

Not the problem if that's what you were referring to.

No, installing dlls into the sys32 is different. What I meant by hand-holding is when XP tries to find the INF to use and can't (which is what you mentioned earlier)

Do this (condensed version):

Run the omega-corner executable and extract the drivers.

Then go to device manager, right-click display adapter, select update driver, check the radio button "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".

Click radio button "Dont search. I will choose the driver to install" (this is where the XP hand-holding ends)

Then use the INF located in the omega-corner dir.

Afterwards open /cpanel and run the setup to install the ATI control panel.

Restart, rinse and repeat if necessary.

That is wierd your M9 driver is giving you all these problems. It could possibly be a physical component in your vid card is bad. I ordered nVidia's Quadro4 700 GoGL from Dell's spare parts a few weeks ago that gave me all sorts of problems, just wouldn't work in my comp.. I returned it and got one that works. Also, Omega's latest drivers won't install correctly, you have to do the whole Device Mng, Display Adapter, Update Driver, Have Disk thing, I think, but i'm sure you tried that. If it is a software issue, and something is conflicting, did you try installing the drivers in Safe Mode? I would think it should at least install in Safe Mode. If that doesn't work, I'd make sure all drivers you've installed, including when you had the nVidia card, are completely removed. Maybe download a trial of System Mechanic from download.com and run Registry Cleaner to make sure all invalid registry entries from your previous driver installations are removed. Also, I would run Driver Cleaner 2.6. If your deperate, you might even go so far as to download Norton System Works (kazaa or someplace)and run Norton WInDoctor, you don't have to install it. You can click on windoc.exe in NU folder. Windoc.exe fixes a whole bunch of problems in WinXP. These are just a few ideas to keep you busy. Sorry, I can't hink of anything else.

Well I see someone posted right before this message. If Vers directions doesn't work, try doing it in Safe Mode.

The system keeps having the same problem, I've given up and gone back to the buggy version from Febuary.
Okay, on the "XP Handholding" - *shrug* still bombs
As for 'from the old nVidia card' - this never had an nVidia card; I had another I8200 with one. I've been trying most of these solutions in safe mode with little or no luck.
:-(
Oh well, thanks anyway
