XPS 15-9575, questions about Active Pen (PN579X)

I recently bought the Active Pen (PN579X) to go with my XPS 15 9575, and I found that I had a few questions. I am hoping some one might know the answers.

1. Is there a way to turn the pen off or put it to sleep? I really don't like wasting battery to have it sitting idle.

2. Is there a sleep timer? If there is, how long and can the settings be changed?

3. What is the difference between AES and MPP? I understand what they are, but I can't see any difference in the way they function.

4. Where can I get replacement nips/tips of the pen?

I just received some Wacom Bamboo Ink replacement nibs and they appear to be compatible.  They come in packs of three with different feels.

I don't have that pen yet but will on Monday.  I do have the two previous versions.

No way to turn off or put to sleep so no timers.  The AAAA battery powers the screen interaction and are supposed to last about a year.  The two button cell batteries handle the Bluetooth and seem to have a shorter life.

The Pen works with a Modern Standby system and can bring it out of low power mode.  The top button can be programed to open certain utilities.  There is a driver which allows settings using the three buttons.

I assume the nibs can be purchased from either Dell or Wacom but they don't appear to wear much on my 9365.  I notice they include tweezers with this unit.  Possibly for pulling out the replaceable nib.  The Microsoft Pens for the Surface devices have interchangeable tips but I don't think these pens have that option.

@Mary G Thank you for the link. Unfortunately, the manual does not have any answers to my questions.

@Saltgrass Thank you for your reply. I am disappoint there is no off or sleep options as I for see my heavy use of the pen to drain the battery rather quickly. It does have a device to replace the nib, but the are no replacements with the pen or in the Dell store. As for from Wacom, their nibs look different from the one illustrated in the manual, so I don't know if they will work. Hopefully the life of the nib is long, but based on my Wacom stylus, that will not be the case. A few months of heavy use and it will be gone.

 

I am still looking for information of the AES and MPP differences.

The link Mary gave you does cover the AES or MPP.  Since you know what they are, the pen has a was to tell which configuration it is operating in by pushing both buttons and see how many times the light flashes.

It sounds like the Microsoft Pen Profile is used on Surface Systems and the AES is what the Dell system uses.

As far as the wear and tear, I don't draw and use increased pressure which might wear the tip.  Since Dell states the nibs are replaceable, there must be some place to buy them.

I looked around for a replacement nib and did not see one which looks similar.  You might need to use the online chat to see if it might help.

I just got the new Pen.  It had one replacement which I assume you already know.  Other than that I noticed the Wacom Bamboo Ink pens seem to have replacement nibs with varying feels with the nibs.  I do not know if they will work with this pen.

I noticed, so far, there are no button batteries.  I hope this is the case since those things went out fairly often and could be as expensive as $5 each...

I have my system set as AES and will be using it that way.  I will probably, at some time, change it to MPP to see what happens.  Since I really don't draw, I may not notice a difference although it might also be related to how the top button interacts with the system.

Next I need to make sure I have the correct software installed for the Pen.....

I also found out it is possible to accidently change the Pen configuration from AES to MPP...  If yours ever stops being recognized by the screen, check that setting.... :Embarrassed:

Could you please give me  the link for Wacom Bamboo Ink replacement nibs which are compatible with PN579X. I bought  "Wacom Standard Pen Nibs - Digital pen nib - black (pack of 5) - for Intuos4 Large, Medium, Small, Wireless, X-Large" on www.dell.com recently. But they are not compatible.

Thank you! I didnt even know Inking Mode was a thing, and it solved my problem perfectly. As an aside, I must remember to stop little fingers from playing with my pen!

NIB REPLACEMENTS:  I haven't attempted this myself, but on Dell's webpage "Dell Active Pen PN579X Support Center", under FAQ's, it states you can contact Dell Tech Support to get a replacement tip.

FAQ:  MY TIP IS WORN OUT.  HOW DO I GET A REPLACEMENT?

*   The pen package comes with a SPARE TIP and a tweezer.  Refer to 'Tip replacement' in the User Guide for more details.

*   ALTERNATIVELY, you can contact Dell Tech Support to get a replacement tip.

*   Before contacting Dell Tech Support, get the following information ready:  Order Number, System Service Tag, and the PPID found on the box or on the label inside the pen. The PPID starts with CN.
