Ok then, let's call it a notebook instead of a laptop. I don't intend to use such a notebook on my lap anyway - I want it as a desktop replacement!

No models or plans for such models have yet been rumoured, hinted, announced or seen as of the moment. I expect that to remain the case for a little while yet at least.

No inside info, I just know Dell very well now and have becme quite adept at having educated guesses as to these matters.

As soon as I can get a 256MB video card to go with the Sony 17" WUXGA 1920X1200, I'll order one. It'll fit perfectly into my briefcase. Even HP has a 17" WSXGA 1650X1050, and Apple has been selling its 17" WXGA 1440X900 for over a year, I think.

Where's Dell's?

From what i been able to gather, DELL is about 1-2yrs behind. So it will be awhile before we see a 17inch Display for a Dell Notebook. (If Ever)  What i wuld really like to see, are some Double Capacity batteries for the 9100/XPS systems. 15' WUXGA screen use up a lot of power, imagine what a 17' will do to your batteries.......  I dont wanna have to buy a portable Generator for my portable PC :)

I have actually just recieved some inside information today that confirmed something that I heard a while ago. I cannot be very specific about other specs, etc as I do not want myself or this person to get into trouble..... but I will say those that want a UXGA 17" laptop from Dell may be happy come October/ November this year.....

If that's the case, I'll wait to see what happen. I just hope the 17" Dell will look as good as the 17" Sony or Apple.

The new Sony 17" uses the XBRITE screen...same as the Toshiba CASV. It will be pretty hard to beat.

...the end of the year? Technology could change dramatically in that time. I would expect to see SATA and PCI-E in notebooks by that time.

I look forward to it, shame it's not sooner. I just hope they are not silly enough to leave out the numeric keypad, which is what really puts me off the sony and the toshiba (otherwise I would have given up waiting for Dell ;-)).

why bother with something "as good as" an apple? just get the real thing. you've already settled for a copy of a real OS with crash-prone windows, why settle for a cheap computer too? get a real OS as well as a real computer!

(don't even try to argue that windows is better than unix, that will only prove your lack of intelligence)

ROCK SOLID!

raeray,

I have used PC, Mac and SGI for more than 10 years now and I like them all.

My Dell 8500 (XP) actually has crashed less often in the past year than my Mac G4 (10.2.8) desktop. I run mostly high-end PC-only 3D software (Alias StudioTools) on the Dell and 2D software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign...) on the Mac.

The $2,799 17 Apple PowerBook is great looking, but it only has a 1440 X 900 screen instead of a gorgeous 1920 X 1200 screen that comes on a much less expensive but equally good looking $1700 17 Sony laptop.

I’m waiting to see what Dell 17 has to offer first before making a major purchase for my company. Since Mac can’t run any of the 3D software we need, PowerBooks are totally out of the question.
