Yes, you can install a 2.5inch SATA-3/600 SSD in most Dell Inspiron desktops. I suggest you get the PDF manual. Looks like Inspiron 3670 comes in 2 sizes (expansion options might vary).

Interesting you want to install a $400 SSD in a $500 desktop.

2.5 inch drives mount to the front cover on a 3670.  The data cables and power cables however are not there.  Drives get power from 6 pin cables from the motherboard. @DELL-Chris M may know what the part number is for the 2.5 inch drives sata power 6 pin cable.

Ordered the 045GG3 cables on 16 September.  Delayed from a 18 September delivery until 28  September. Must be a hot item. Will wait and hope for the new date of delivery.

Yeah, that makes more sense.

Also, more practical (that is what I would install). Crazy cheap, right? (compared to a few years back).

Why users still like using slow spinning-platter-HDD as Windows boot-drives is a mystery to me. However, I know why computer manufacturers like using them ... it saves $25-$50 on price of system :TongueTied:

Received cable and installed SSD's with no problems. All is well.

Thanks Chris and to all others on forum.

I think they figure it is fast enough for what they do and lack the confidence to clone data to an ssd.

Why users want a slow SSD for the boot drive is beyond me. An NVMe drive can be four times as fast in these 3670PCs. Which can get read/write speeds of 2000MB/s(16Gb/s) compared to the slow 500MB/s(4Gb/s) read/write speeds of an SSD.

SSDs were great when I started using them in 2009. But these NVMe drives can be super fast. The 3670 is limited to only 2000MB/s read/write speeds(which still gives you several second boot times). But other PCs can get close to double that read/write speed with a capable NVMe drive.

Fastest Drive in the world doesn't make things faster.  Booting is faster and saving files is faster.  Programs etc are not.  2.5 inch PRO drive is better endurance wise than an NVME PCI-E stick.

he SSDs

Many are rated for over 100TB, 200TB, 300TB and more. And in real world use you can easily get much more. It will take me many years to reach that. Heck my Blue Iris PC streams fourteen cameras 24/7/365 is only at 80TB written after five years. But that system used a samsung SSD for 4.5 years. They were rated for well over 800TB in testing. Now I have the NVMe drive and that SSD in use in one of my 3670 PCs I setup with Blue Iris. The 3670 PC is much better than the old Dell I had been using with Blue Iris. With a 3rd Gen core i5.

I've been using SSDs since 2009. And have them in nine of my ten PCs/Laptops. As well as use them with my game systems and some of my media players. Some of my SSDs have over 200TB written. I've had zero issues with the three dozen I've used in the last nine years. Well except for the one I broke the connector off. But that was user error.:Embarrassed:

But the SSDs are slow compared to the NVMe drives. That's one reason I got three of the 3670 PCs. SInce it could take an NVMe drive. Even though the 3670 PCIe lane runs in low power mode, limiting the speeds to 16Gb/s, it still so much faster than the SSDs at 4Gb/s. So instead of having ten to fifteen second boot times with an SSD, it's only several seconds with the NVMe drives in my 3670PC. And the faster they boot the better. Since I run my 3670 Plex machine and my 3670 Blue Iris machine headless. So when I need to reboot it for updates, I want it back up as quickly as possible. Since I don't like waiting. And my daily use PC is my third 3670 PC. I want that to boot fast too whenever I use it. I shut it down and boot up several times a day. The faster it boots the better.

aaronwt,

I have a question/observation for you please. Clearly you seem to have an intimate knowledge of the Dell 3670 and pcs in general. A bit of background: I purchased a 3670 Dec 2018 and shortly after I purchased an HP EX900 M.2 120gb PCIe NMVe from newegg, my long time supplier. The HP unit was on sale and was cheap. After many hours and various attempts I was unsuccessful at getting the HP ssd to boot windows 10. Either after cloning the oem HD or a fresh install of Win 10. After researching on the net, seems the HP ssd doesn't play well with other brand pcs, and there is zero support by HP/drivers. My plan was to put OS and support apps on the HP, then use the Dell supplied Seagate 1tb mag HD for additional storage as needed in the future.

But what I did run across during my experiment was in the 3670 BIOS, it clearly recognized the HP EX900 in system info. And I was able to store files and install Win10 on the HP ssd, just couldn't get it to boot Win10. But in the Dell BIOS, when I disabled SATA interface and re-booted, the HP was no longer visible. So it seems even tho the slot is labeled M.2 PCIe on the motherboard, it actually uses the SATA interface. Which is limited to 6gb/sec max performance. Quite interesting I found.

Any comment?

PS: I was able to clone HD to an older Intel sata 240 gb ssd I had, and have that currently booting Win10. The HP EX900 still installed too. Just a storage space for now, sadly.
