PS4110 and 4kn drives

Does the Dell Equalogic PS4110 support 4kn drives?

Hello,

I'm about 99% sure those are not EQL qualified drives based on the symptoms you describe.  Additionally, Dell EMC doesn't sell array drives on arrays that are out-of-warranty.  So I suspect you have  Dell server or other non-EQL drives.  You can either try to get array under contract, which would also allow you to upgrade the array firmware.   6.0.x is years old.    You can also ask them about Dell Extended Maintenance or otherwise try to find a 3rd party maintainer for proper EQL compatible drives.

Hello,

There are some 4K hard drives that are qualified for the 4110.  Unless you are referring to EQL volumes, then depending on the EQL firmware you can present a volume to a server that's using 4K vs. 512 byte sector size.

Since the drives have to be Dell/EQL specific the sector size of the drive isn't important.  Since you can't use OEM or other Dell drives in the 4110.  They have to be made specifically for the Dell PS Series SAN.  So a PV drive or Dell server hard drive won't work either.

Okay. thanks for the reply Don. As far as I know these are EQL certified drives. We had to go through Dell spare parts because the array is not under warranty. I've tried two "new" drives from Dell with the same result. You put them in the array and after about 15 seconds the right LED goes amber. Group manager shows the drive as Unavailable. Array firmware is 6.0.7. Just trying to figure out why the drives are not working. The part number of the drive we received from Dell is 61H3H.

You'd think since they took the service tag of the array they could get the correct drives shipped. Guess that asking too much. At any rate thanks for the reply.

Hello,

If it turns out those are the correct drives, it could be that your firmware is too old to support 4K drives.  That firmware is from 2013.  Before 4K drives became common.

That's good to know. But if the rest of the drives in the array are 512 native can they be mixed with 4k drives? I would expect there to be a requirement for the drive architectures to match at that level.

Hello,

OK did some more research.  I looked at that Dell PN they used and that appears to be for a Dell server, not PS Series SAN.  I looked up the Seagate drive model and that is NOT on the qualified list of drives for the 4110X.

The largest 10K SAS drive qualified is 1.2TB RAW.

Minimum FW for most of them is 7.1.x the newest ones required 9.0.x.

So I would say that you did not receive the correct drives for a PS Series SAN.

Hello,

Can you send me the MFR and drive part number?   I am seeing that a number of drives need newer firmware than you are running.

The 4K qualified drives I believe use the 512e feature to present themselves as 512b drives but the firmware on the array must support that too.

Hello,

You are very welcome.  The maximum contract is seven years from ship date.  If you do get it under contract you'll want to update firmware before adding in the drives for sure!

If you go to support.dell.com and put in the service tag you can see the ship date.

Don

61H3H Dell Part Number

Thanks Don. Hopefully Dell will just approve getting the array back under warranty (although I think that has a low probablity). If not, looks like new array time.

I have similar issue with my PS4110 blade enclosure arrays.  I lost one of the drives and drived to find a replacement on the Dell website.   No good.  So I ordered the exact same part number (tray and all) and installed the replacement only to find out that its not exactly the same part.   What gives?  How do I get my array back up and running?

Hello,

Unless the drive was specifically made for the EQL arrays it will not work of you model array  They come from the MFR specially coded.  The external drive number is the same.  The tray is a Dell standard carrier.  A drive for Power Edge or SC array will not work in an PS Series array.  There is also no way to convert one from OEM to EQL compatible.

You need to find a 3rd party maintainer who specifically supports EQL arrays.

You can also get the array back under warranty.  The PS contract are available up to 7 years from ship date.  There is also a new program to do Hardware only support contract for up to 12 years from ship date.

 Regards,

Don
