Basically they just pull off. Dont try and lever it off or it will go flying across the room.
Make sure the laptop is off when you do it as there is quite a bright led behind the key.
You can buy a puller from Amazon but all it does is enable you to grip the key evenly.

Won't that break the plastic retainer clips?

No. If you do it carefully. Its the only way to get them off there is no other way. They snap off and they snap on. You can get a replacement clip online if you manage to break it.
