Remove the card and reseat it. If that does not help in Device Manager where the card is listed right click and select uninstall. Then reboot and let Windows detect and install drivers. There could be a problem with the card since showing up as other devices makes me think it is not being detected as a video device. Run system diagnostics. Restart the system and at the Alienware logo start tapping F12. Run full diagnostics paying special attention to the video results. Hard to believe that it is a BIOS issue but I am wondering if the BIOS is detecting the card properly. And the fact that the integrated video is working makes me think that the onboard video was not disabled because the BIOS does not see the card. Restart the system and at the Alienware logo start tapping F2 and see if the card is detected in the BIOS. If not remove the CMOS (coin cell) battery and leave it out for 15 minutes (Intel recommends 30). Then reinstall the battery and see if the card is now detected. And the fans spinning does not mean the card is working properly, there could still be a problem in the card itself.

uninstalled, windows doesn't detect or install anything for my GPU, how would I go about reinstalling it now? it wasn't listed as "other devices" it was only showing in "Hidden" devices, but still under display adaptors. And on board WAS still disabled, I just re-enabled it so I can use it currently. I still get video with onboard disabled, just not clearly enough to see. I'll check bios real fast and i'll try to remove the CMOS and update. Thanks

Edit: also, I didn't mean since the dan is running, nothing is wrong with the GPU. I just meant it is getting power. I've seen other people have the issue that the gpu wouldn't get any power, so I figured i'd mention.

I forgot to ask, I assume you had a 6 pin power plug that was connected to the video card. So the card was working properly then the next day nothing? And you can see a display on the monitor if you connect to the 960 but not clear enough to be usable?  That almost sounds like the drivers that installed were Windows default drivers not NVidia.  And I also assume that when you ran diagnostics, the card was not detected. Sorry if I did not understand correctly. Just trying to get a picture of what is going on. Have you created a restore point in Windows? If so it might help if you restore back to a date prior to the GPU giving you trouble. And if the card was not working and you reinstalled it, then Windows does not detect the card (so it is still not working as prior to uninstalling it) then either the card is bad or Windows is at fault, hence the restore suggestion.

after a full diagnostics, It doesn't seem to appear anywhere but i'm also not exactly sure where im supposed to be looking at it. it seems after I download from the nvidia site, automatically or manually, I keep getting told there is no compatible hardware. so I guess it just stopped recognizing the thing is even there?

it is a 6 pin yes, and I meant I can see a screwy resolution with the mobo disabled. The 960 doesn't display whatsoever when I plug the hdmi into it. I have to shutdown pc and plug up to the integrated hdmi slot instead, and the GTX before would show only as hidden, in display adaptors. I unintalled it from there like you said, but windows does not reinstall the device on bootup. I go to the nvidia website to download, and, like I said, says there is no compatible NVIDIA hardware. So I can't even reinstall it whatsoever.

Would I be best off buying a new GPU? I would like to make sure first, before I buy it, only for the issue not to be with the GPU and be stuck in the same boat.

Also i'll attempt a restore, and comeback with the results
Edit: apparently there are no backup/restore points. which is odd I coulda swore I made one around after first receiving this pc.

I hate to advise you to buy another GPU until we are sure that the problem is the card. However it is starting to look like the card is bad. It is very unusual for the card not to be detected at all. Usually you plug in the card, Windows will attempt to install generic drivers, then you install the correct drivers...very simple. 2 options at this point. Complete clean install of Windows with the card installed and see if Windows detects the card during the install. Or purchase another GPU such as a GTX 1060 6 GB OC (1070 is about 50% more in cost but also higher performance). As a comparison the GTX 1060 6GB OC is about 74% better performance than the 960.

Alrighty, I've now clean reset windows 10, but still no avail. Uninstalling and reseating the GPU has also not made windows attempt to install it, and even scanning for hardware changes, the 960 STILL ceases to show.

It may be important to note my monitor isn't exactly all too great. unfortunately my good ones got lost in an eviction (darn toxic roomates) so this is a borrowed, Sanyo HD TV from back when HD tv's were pretty much coming out. And it has been a PAIN in the rear to use with this PC at first, but I got past that. It was just requiring a PC to use DVI instead of HD, but I fixed that (can't remember how.)

Is there any chance this could have started as an issue with this TV? Despite that it doesn't explain why it now, after uninstalling the GPU, doesn't want to reinstall, nor even detect the 960.

Just thinking of anything else before I go for that new GPU. Although it's fitting, I've been thinking of upgrading lately, though I was hoping to be able to get my gf a gaming laptop first.
