will dell be offering centrino 2 by the end of the summer as either new models or as upgrades to the existing centrino models?

Dell will likely release new models to coincide with "Centrino 2" (the 533MHz FSB dothans and new 955 Chipset). These will not be compatible with existing 855 chipsets as the FSB is incompatible, so at least new boards will be required which is why I expect new models .

As for release, Intel is set to let them loose around September, so assuming this stays on track then Dell should release soon afterwards.

Note that this is all guesswork, nothing firm. Except for the requirements of Centrino 2 which is confirmed as needing the new chipset.

I hope so because the current lineup of laptops are bad. I'd like to see Dell bring back the I8100/8200 form factor laptops with widescreen. The current 8600/9100/XPS form factor is horrible. If Dell insists to continue the XPS build, my next laptop will not be a Dell.

Dell will VERY likely continue with the existing form factors. They've been extremely popular, and it cheaper for Dell to intriduce a new model if they dont have to intrduce a new for factor. Is is the 2 spindle design that you don't like? Because if its 3 spindle you want, you're gonna have a long wait, because Dell probably will never go back to that.

Yeah, I liked 3 spindles; I like the flexibility in options. The 8100 has better eraserhead/mouse buttons. I bought an 8600 and its eraserhead/mouse buttons felt cheap and non-responsive. I returned it.

Well as far as the "cheapness" feel (I think its OK...), Dell may address this with a new release but they will likely not go back to the three spindle design as mentioned. The current series has been extremely successful, particularly the i8600, so don't expect to large of a change from them.

I think Dell has already addressed this by removing the eraserhead/mouse buttons on 8600c. Do they plan to bring it back with improvements? I prob would buy the 8600 again if they improved the eraserhead/mouse buttons. I don't use touch pads. They are horrible.
