Go to Advanced Settings and then to Administration Settings. Select 'Enable UPnP function' and Messenger will be good to go. You don't need to open any ports.
You have to log into your router. On the web interface there are several options at the top (probably blue squares with white letters). Choose Advanced Settings and a small warning screen will pop up; just hit OK and proceed. If you don't know how to log into your router, let me know.
