If you have only $800 to spend, you'd be better off with a good, used year-old midrange system, or an older 8500 or 8200 system, than a new 1000 or 1150.

Just as inexpensive new cars (Kia Rio, etc.) aren't good value buys, neither are the budget notebooks.

well i have reconsidered the choice and maybe i could buy something better..

with 15,4wsxga+ , celeron mobile 1,3 ,60gbhdd 32mb gf440go. 512 ddr - 6,5lb - hp zt3000 for 1174$ or with p4m 1.5ghz rocessor for 1300 $ - but I guess celeron would be enough for me - I dont play games

because... INSPIRON'S 8600 weight is about 6,9 lb and with almost the same config costs moreee

hmm I still think about heavier - almost 8-9lb compaq.. but its heavyyy ... on the other hand..cheap - with AMD 2800 about 1100$ - with rest of config as earlier ^^.

The 8600 is a more solidly engineered system than the value line (1000/1150/5150) systems, even though it is made by the same company (Compal).

Whichever system you choose, get a 3-year warranty at least - after 1 year, repairs can be expensive and the notebook will not be of retirement age, so you'll be out the repair cost.

hmm that's the problem .. it may be outside US.. in Europe and 3 year warranty ~ 300 bucks :(

By the way... still thinking about INPS 1000 because of office purposes.. I dont want great performace for huge money...

Doi you think Inspiron will die earlier than my desktop based on abit nf7s with Athlont2200+??

I have owned once for 6 months Insp 8200 but I sold this... cause of liquidity problems ;), as I know the buyer still uses that laptop with no problems (more than year)

well.. what i say is.. i won't recommend a 1000 or 1150 personally, but i guess it's ok if you're just doing some documents and web surfing.. try get a p4 or pM if you can.. if you use a laptop on battery and moving a lot then get 600m.. i'm happy with my 8600 now.. and i think 14" is pretty much enough for me, since 8600 is only wider than a 14" laptop.. ^^

Click here for an 8500 for under $1,000 USD.  It comes with only a 30 day warranty, so beware.   There are 8500's on the Dell outlet for around $1,500.  Found another one here with 2 years at home warranty left. $895

Honestly, $800 is not a lot if you want a notebook these days.  Search for an older PIII Thinkpad on Ebay.
