i just did... i configured it somewhat decently for $1950. I would salvage (obvioUSLY) my 7k60 from my 8200. however, the 8600 that i configured came out to 256MB. as i remember, the specs are something like this:

1.8GHZ cpu

256 ram

128mb vid

40gb hd

i would be fine with the cpu, cuz i heard somewhere (maybe this forum, a while ag0) that a 1.8 dothan could run as fast as my 2.4ghz p4m (probably wrong, so correct me if anything ). i would also be fine with the hd, cuz i will be putting in my 7k60. however, the ram bothers me. i spent almost 200 to upgrade my 8200 to 1GB, but that was PC2100, not what the 8600 uses.... so i dunno. im REALLY tempted by the radeon tho.... itching to play splinter cell pandora tomorrow.

Either the 8600 or the 600m. If you want to do gaming, look at the 8600.

FYI: the 1.8 will leave your 2.4 in the dust! I only have a 1.6 Banias and it is VERY fast. With double the cache, you're liable to get a speeding ticket.

You WILL want to bump up that RAM to at least 512. Of course I don't have to tell you to buy it from Crucial or some other third party.

Anywhere from $20-$500US. Depends on how generous people are. Set your reserve bid at $300. And if it doesn't sell...Give up and send it to me (I'll pay shipping :P)

umm... no thanx. when i see ppl buying 8200's on ebay with features that arent on par with mine (ex. 256MB vs 1GB of ram) for approx 1200-1500, i cant take ur comment seriously

You should figure $800 - $1000.  My I8100 will probably fetch the same, when I finally put it up.  Add in the APR, extra drives...  You'll get close to $1,000 I bet.

hmm, alright, i looked at both the 9100 and the 8600. there was a price diff of about 250, and for some reason the 9100 cost less. these are the configs:

9100: 2.8 WUXGA, 512MB ram 2dimms (im guessing dual channel?), free 60 gb hd upgrade, tm1350 card, radeon9700 128mb price: ~1800

8600: 1.8 wsxga, 512mb 1 dimm, 40gb hd, tm1350 card, radeon 9600 128MB price: ~2050

my question is, how do these differ in terms of processor type, or ram speed.... i havent been keeping up, and now that im considering buying one of these, i wanna make the best decision.

Well, without sounding too *obvious*, the answers are actually kind of *obvious*

The 9100 is obviously more PC for the money.  But, the 8600 is probably the most heavily favored right now. (smaller/lighter = current trend)  In your first post, you said you didn't want a 9100/XPS because of size/bulk.  Well, if that's still the case, then I'd probably go 8600.

However, if you think you can deal with it, I'd say 9100 for 2 reasons........

#1.) I just have a hard time paying too much money for a computer.  In this case, the 8600 is ***over*** $2K while the 9100 is well ***under*** $2K.

#2.) The 9100 is running dual-channel on the ram and you're running a 9700 graphics card vs 9600 on the 8600.  Not a *huge* difference, imho, but enough for your sake of "gaming" to warrant considering.

Hope that helps.

If you're going to carry the thing, the 9100 is a boat anchor.  "Starting at" 9 pounds.  The 8600 is two pounds lighter.  Also, on the 8600 don't go to 1 dimm unless it's free and doesn't impact a rebate.  Choose the min and upgrade later.  Save money.

I chose the 600m to be even lighter as the 8100 is too heavy.

im leaning toward the 9100, as i would like the extra performance given by the dual channel ram and the 9700, however it is a brick and a half at 9lbs to start. i dunno... its a tradeoff, performance for mobility. are there any major problems with the 9100? (i dont really wanna browse thru tons of messages... ) thanx

I've not read of any but hernias...    And of the 50+ emails I get per day via my site, not one has been about the 9100.

personally i like the 8600 more.. for the p-M processor.. some said that a p-M is equivalent to 1.5 times it's speed to a p4, and the centrino logo is quite attractive so far, i'm not seeing any other companies having good video cards on their laptops, maybe some radeon 9200SE..

  1. 9100 have HT while 8600 have speedstep..
  2. 9100 support dual channel while 8600 does not
  3. 9100 is around 2lbs heavier than 8600
  4. 9100 have more I/O ports than 8600
  5. 9100 have an Integrated SUBWOOFER! (i looked to this and the radeon 1st place)
  6. 9100 uses radeon 9700 while 8600 uses radeon 9600PT
  7. 9100 does NOT have an APR
  8. some report 9100 have bad battery life which is around 2hours, i had mine running almost 5hours

basically if you're just doing gaming without moving the laptop much, i'd say go for the 9100.. but if you move a lot and require long battery life, then go for 8600

hmm... the 9100 loaded with the 256MB radeon 9800 makes it look juicy... by the way, is it safe to assume that my 7k60 will fit in there? will i need anything except the blade adapter?
