yes, I do have the same problem with you. I have tried the game Home2.
also, I have to say there are many other problems. I cannot play game like Red alert 2 properly, because when I tried to get into network mode play, I cannot find the new game button.
I also found that I could not edit DV using windows movie maker or Adobe premiere. laptop cannot show the video picture but can hear the sound. :(
the worst of that is I was told that the dell laptop was not compatiable with the camcorder! I cost much more money to buy my sony camcorder than this laptop, but such words means I cannot use it any more :( :(
See, your problem is that whenever level one support, in Bangalore India, can't find your specific problem in their flipbook/flowchart then they say "sorry your XXXX is not supported." Which of course happens more times than not.
That's exactly the same response I got when I told them about my video card heat problem. They said my game was not supported. Which meant that 99% of all my software had to be thrown into the trash. That wasn't going to fly with me.
However, I feel your network and digital video problems aren't related to the video card overheating. I could probably help you more with those other things if you emailed me the exact description of problems with Red Alert 2 and your camera. porkfatty@yahoo.com
i don't think it is the graphics adapter, because this problem does not happen, when i use any external crt monitor or tft monitor. i think it might be the motherboard, which gets too hot because of the overheated
gfxcard, and doesn't really get cooled enough. if it is cold in my room, and i use a cooling pad, it actually works a little longer but after 50 minutes of playing even then it crashes...
so please dell dont tell my my programs are incompatible...it definitely is related to the temperature of the gfx card!!!
i have exactly the same problem, but i just wrote an email to dell support (in german) wich describes the problem again (see below). there is also a big german dell forum,
Mein Monitor Flimmert. Fehler ist bei folgenden Spielen / Programmen passiert: Quake3, Unreal, Age of empires, Empire earth, Call of duty.. usw usw. Meist anwendungen die eben die grafikkarte stark beanspruchen.
I have not tried viewing it externally when this happens. But I will.
I have now been playing 3D games with the battery removed for a couple of days now. So far, I haven't had any of the wierd fog effect clouding my display.
It could also be the heat (in excess of 100 degrees) causing interference with other components, like the LCD I'm sure is sensitive to temperature.
I'm also afraid that these high temperatures could end up damaging other components. But the battery trick seems to work for now. That brick of a battery does store and block a lot of heat as well as the charger creates it's own heat too.
I too have a problem with my Inspiron 8600 with ATI Mobility 9600 Pro Turbo (see specs in signature). One of my main reasons for picking this laptop / video card combo was so that I could have a good gaming experience with this laptop (in addition to using it for business). It is quite clear that the GPU runs WAY too hot. I regularly see it hit 100 degrees Celsius (it probably goes higher but I don’t think the thermal sensors that FanGUI reads will report anything higher). When the GPU gets hot enough I have seen graphic artifacts and significantly reduced performance (presumably as the GPU throttles down so as not to burn itself out).
I don’t think that having to remove the battery and memory panel every time I want to play a video game is the right answer. Considering I spent over $3,000 for this laptop and all the extras I think that DELL should do better than that. I hope DELL will do the right thing and fix the GPU problem for current owners. From what I have read there is a rather inexpensive fix that can be done to make the heat sink more effective. Perhaps DELL can authorize this modification to be done by a DELL authorized technician at their cost – thereby not voiding our warranty. This would go a long way to showing that DELL cares about their customers. I would appreciate it if a DELL technician would contact me to resolve this issue. My system service tag is 6CTDX31.
Well, this morning (about 4am) I couldn't sleep so I decided to play Halo. I played Halo for SIX HOURS straight, never even standing up. Before playing, I used I8KfanGUI to set both CPU and GPU fans to "High". The setting was not completely retained, but the fans were higher than "Slow". CPU fan ran about 5,000rpm and the GPU fan ran about 6,000rpm. Ever now and then, I would duck out of Halo to check my temps and fan speeds. GPU temps never got above about 85C. However, I should point out I am using a Targus Chillpad which I think helps A LOT. I noticed a good 20C drop in GPU temps after getting the Chillpad.
If six hours of Halo playing (with no noticable drop in performance) doesn't overheat my system, nothing will. Well, maybe not "nothing".... lol
If you want the fans to maintain the speed you want, use temperature control, not direct fan control.
direct fan control will slow the fans when you enter another application. temperature control will maintain the high speeds you want.
Isn't the targus chillpad just a plastic plate with columns on the back that lift up your laptop at an angle? yeah, I do that with my battery or wallet. I haven't had any problems lately since removing my battery while playing. But that's still just a work-around.

Well, that's very different than the 2 other models that I have seen. I think that I shall purchase one. Thank you for pointing that out. Maybe Dell will start distributing those with their computers if they can't figure out how to properly attach heatsinks.
I am French and I cannot get any support from Dell. I have just bought an Inspiron 8600 c, 60 G HD, DVDR, 1024 RAM, PM 1.7 and the famous Ati radeon 9600 Pro turbo 128 meg DDr.
My problem is that I cannot play games like far cry or combat flight simulator battle for europe fluently. The graphism are just a bit better against my last laptop with a radeon 9000 and 64 meg. I think it is the driver or something else. I have installed Catalyst, omega, dell driver (2003),

Not exactly, the Targus Chillpad has two 80MM fans which draws air from under the laptop and blows it out the back.

Gives you a look at the Chillpad. Trust me, I was quite shocked with the temperature drop as well. It also really helps with DIMM temps.

hey;
I also have the same problem, the GPU temperature jumps up to 100 degrees Celsius. I hope they help us with this important problem !!!!!
