CAN ANYONE HELP ME ? with the m60

October 21st, 2003 13:00

Aron,

I do not do video edition, but since you were not getting any replies I spoke up.

I have an M60 (1.6 P-M, 1 gig RAM, 60 gig 7200 HD)

I do lots of work with SolidWorks (computer aided design software).  It is very computer intensive and I am EXTREMELY happy with my new machine. It is signifigantly faster than my workstation (Compaq W4000, 1.8P4, 1gig RAM, nVidia FX500, 40 gig 7200 HD).

It is amazing for what I do.

Would you say that the M60 is much better than the Inspiron 8600 ? why ?

for video editing and ps if your not doing any pro 3D requiring OGL and support for new DX realtime shaders then I'm not sure why you'd consider the M60?

Play any games on that beast?   If so how do they run?

I just got my M60 yesterday. I am going to use it for mapping and GIS collection. I went with the M60 because of its tougher case, and because of the Complete Care warranty. I haven't taxed it yet, been loading about 1,000 square miles of USGS Orthoquads, doesn't skip a beat. The keys are a little stiff for my taste, but otherwise it seems to be what I thought it would be. The built-in 802.11 is very nice, seems to work better than my other cards. My only quandry now is a case for it. I have a leather case for my old laptop which the M60 fits fine, but I would like a backpack or vertical case to make travelling with it easier. I am going to use it in a vehicle much of the time, and just plain out in the woods the rest of the time.

then you may consider a Pelican case. I got one for my M50 with a small backpack to put it in, to take camping, in open boats and put in back of truck. a little heavy but its safe, hard shell and water proof

I like the Pelican cases BUT, I have had trouble with them. I got one 20 years ago & it is still great, but I got one about 6 years ago and when I tested it the first day, the seal leaked. They said send it back, but the replacement ALSO leaked, just as much. I put in a different closed cell foam seal and it has been fine. I still use both, but be sure to test them when new and then from time to time. The best way is to fill it with cold air, like outside air in winter, etc. If it is not cold, room air is OK. With the case empty and closed place it in a bathtub, etc of very warm water like a hot bath, but not so hot as to cook it or you. The warm water warms the case and the colder air causes a slight positive pressure as the case warms and if it bubbles, you have a leak. If there are no bubbles after 10 minutes, dry it VERY well all over the outside and then look inside for any water. It should be perfectly dry. (Duh). If you test it in deep water, don’t go very deep, at some point it will damage it or crush it. A foot deep is all you need. In fact, depth may cause the case to press harder on the seal. A case that is slightly leaky in the rain or 2 inches down might seal fine at 4 feet deep.

If you change altitude very much while driving or flying, etc, and if you own a proper case, you need to allow air pressure to equalize. If you take the case from an air-conditioned house and put it in your black SUV in Tucson, you may pop something, too. In my two cases there is a bleed screw for that purpose. Keep the screw ajar as much of the time as you can.

You could rig up some way to blow through a small hose into the bleed screw hole with the case in water or with very soapy water on the seals, but it seems to be adequate to just do it as outlined above. If you do blow in the hole, do it with your mouth, not compressed gas. If that case blows open you get hurt and you ruin the case.

I believe that Pelican and other companies make some very good cases, but some companies don’t grasp that I care a LOT if my computer(s) get wet. I live on a boat. One drop of water is too much. I have tested 5 or 6 cases made by various companies. Try kayaking or skin diving or outdoor stores. Only one case was waterproof as purchased. I don’t trust them. I test them. Be careful and good luck.

I had a backpack from http://www.ortlieb.de/index_en.htm that was a great bag though I never tested if it was submersable.
