That should read -- I am having this same problem with my Inspiron 5000 all of a sudden. Exactly as Chris described it -- it flickers on, fan goes on, the faintest of flashes occurs to the screen, then all drops and only the center light is on.

This problem occurred after the laptop was put into hibernate once.

Any ideas? Desperate for help.

Thanks
Alex

Hey There-

I am having this same problem now all of a sudden with my Ispiron 5000. Did you find any solution? The problem only occurred for me aftre my roommate put the laptop in hibernation one time, and it never resumed.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi,

After contacting Dell support about the problem, I was told that a motherboard replacement would cost £325 +VAT (17.5%). I contacted the complaints dept twice as the laptop was only 1 month out of the 1 year waranty. Although I received confirmation of receipt of my complaint, after three weeks Dell still had not replied to either complaint. Subsequently I contacted a major PC magazine in the UK who in turn spoke to the Dell press office who in turn contacted me (within two days) and offered as a "gesture of good will" to repair the laptop without charge and extend my waranty to 3years. The laptop was collected by Dell for repair and returned within a couple of days with a new motherboard and LCD panel. Unfortunately it was DOA, therefore an engineer called at my home two days running and replaced the motherboard again, the heat sink, all the memory (1Gig) and the video card. The machine now (obviously) works without problem. I'm satisfied, but dissappointed that it took press intervention to get a response out of Dell. The story was included in this months copy of Personal Conputer World magazine ( see here http://www.pcw.co.uk/news/1159430 ).

Best of luck

Chris
