Download 'Hijack This!' from Here

This is very important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. Most will recommend placing HJT on the root drive (Usually C:\). When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fix checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New -> Folder and name it HJT. For illustrated instructions, click How to create a new folder on C: Drive

Unzip to C:\HJT, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into
a "Save Log" button. Click "Save Log". A Notepad window will open with the contents of the scan. Hit Ctrl+A to select all, Ctrl+C to copy. Reply to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log into the reply

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET.

Someone will analyze your log and post back as soon as possible.

You look clean to me - but I would have liked a FULL hijackthis log, you missed off the important header info section.

Well the head tells me you have an old version of hijackthis.

Use the update feature to get the latest and post a new log for me please.

Thanks.  Do any of you guys have the registry entry

Spybot SD picked that up as VX2/f and when it is deleted my Dell support alerts won't work.  Maybe Spybot is making an error by removing it, and if you guys have that entry I can have Spybot ignore it.  Thanks in advance.

I have an aging Dell Latitude C610.

It does not have that reg key - but that would not mean that is was not a valid key.

It would be best to check with someone with the same machine from the same period.

Post a question in the hardware board here at dell for your machine type - and let us know what the outcome is - for the time being tell Spybot to ignor that found item. When it finds it, right click and add to ignor list.

I have an 8400 that has the vx2 problem and now that I read your threads I found that my Dell alerts don't work either.....interesting coincidence.

I am not one of the "experts" that form the help team.  Those folks are very good at what they do and the last I read they have about a week waiting period for a response.  Personally, I have looked all over the internet on how to get rid of this vx2 monster and the best I can understand is that there are several different versions of it and I can't tell which one of those I have.  I have been downloading software programs that can detect and delete this thing when you first start up the computer.  The problem is that it keeps coming back after rebooting.  Eventually, I expect someone will come up with a way to get rid of it once and for all and in the meantime we all go back to eating our steak dinners, slurping down our Corona's and waiting.  Good luck.

I have a program that I belive it will work. I normally use it to get rid of these problems. I have used it for a long time so I know it is safe to use. http://lavasoft.element5.com/purchase/ there is the link under software click the like that says Ad-ware and download it. Once you have done that update it. It doesn't get the vx2 virus deleted, but it can detect it. The good news is they have a plug-in on the website to get rid of the evil thing. Just scan your computer it will pick up the vx2. Quarentine it but don't delete it yet. Run the plug-in and it should get rid of it for good.

Thanks for the tip,  I just wish it would work.  I have tried your suggestion about a month ago without success.  It appears that I might have a couple of version working on me.  I know one of them is the twain version because spy sweeper has caught that one.  It didn't get rid of it but, at start up I am asked if I want to let this executable run.  I have set the spysweep option to deny it at startup.  Problem is it keeps trying.
