FC Switch Config and CX3-40c

Hello,

I currently have an CX3-40c which is connected to fabric A and B.  Each fabric has one brocade E200 with firmware v5.3.0d.

Switch 1 has the following connections to the EMC controllers:
Port 1 = A1
Port 2 = B1

Switch 2 has the following:
Port 1 = A2
Port 2 = B2

This makes sense since I want each controller to have redundancy if a switch fails.

Here is where I am lost...Switch 1 port 2 (B1) is not zoned nor is Switch 2 port 1 (A2) not included in any zone configuration...is that normal for am EMC?  I would think that I would want redundancy at the switch and controller level.  Any feedback would be appreciated!!

Currently I do not have dual HBA's in my VMware hosts just a single HBA, but either way I should have each SP zoned through the switches correct?  We are working on implementing a Cisco UCS and reviewing the zone config is how I discovered this and just wanted to confirm that both SP's should be zoned.  Thanks!

that is not best practice, you want to have each HBA zoned to SPA and SPB

HBA1 - SPA0/SPB1

HBA2 - SPA1/SPB0

or something of that nature.

Best Practice recommends using single initiator zoning - one HBA to one SP port:

For example - if you have one host that has two HBA's - HBA1 and HBA2, you would create four zones:

HBA1 <--> SPA1 (sw1)

HBA1 <--> SPB1 (sw1)

HBA2 <--> SPA2 (sw2)

HBA2 <--> SPB2 (sw2)

You would do this for each host - HBA1 is connected to SW1 and HBA2 is connected to SW2

Yes, we do have a lot of SPOF and we are working to eliminate that....I appreciate your help with such a quick answer and follow up!

If your hosts have only a single HBA - then put half the hosts on SW1 and half on SW2 - balance the hosts.

Remember that by using one switch, you have a single point of failure at the switch and at the HBA - either one fails on your host is down.

yes, at least  SPA/SPB on the HBA ..you still have a lot of SPOF though.

Hi Glen,

I do have the hosts balanced between the two switches now....and I did have a FC switch failure a couple months ago...lucky for me at that time I only lost access to my test environment.

I was lucky enough to inherit this environment and have completely mapped everything out now and we intend to add dual HBA's in order to elminate the SPOF that seem to be every where.

I appreciate your feedback!

As Dynamox mentioned in the beginning: try not to put all 0 ports on the same switch, same for all 1 ports and so on.

Why ? If you would have the 2 SP ports with the same number (A1, B1 for example) and you have Mirrorview running, both Mirrorview ports on the same switch, so that'd be a SPOF.

Do it like this:

switch 1: A0, B1, A2, B3, A4, B5,....

switch 2: B0, A1, B2, A3, B4, A5,....
