If the I8200 fans are indeed quieter and compatible with the I8100, then I may be interested in replacing the set I just installed in my notebook. If somebody happens to know the part# please be kind enough to post that info.

After applying Artic Silver in the I8100, the new fans didn't seem to trip on as often as before but that was in conjunction with using Christian Diefer's excellent I8kfangui utility. Instructions for application of Artic Silver can be found at the company's website.

A number of people have said that the fans in the i8200 is more quiet than the i8100 fans. I can barely hear my running when they go full speed. The i8200 fans might have different part numbers. When you call Dell Spare Parts, ask for the part number of the i8200 fans.

I was thinking of adding Artic Silver3 thermal goop to help cool my system, but didn't want to go through all the trouble of disaseblying my laptop, but since i have to swap out the fan this would be a good time to do it since my system will be open. Do you have any pics or links that you could refer me to for applying the thermal paste? I havent myself used any, but have read up on it before. Did you notice a significant reduction in tempreature?

The fan assembly is unique since its a OEM fan designed for the Inspiron notebook. I don't think that it would be available for resale from anyone but Dell. Since digikey.com is known to carry Sunon fans, you could try there but I wouldn't expect much.

Then that is a good price - that includes assembly costs also. Do you have the manufacturer and part number from one fan?

Grrr...the fan next to the power cable has started making a grinding noise too, and it doesn't spin up as fast as the other fan, at max speed using fangui. I've only had it 2 weeks.

When applying the thermal grease did you remove the metal thermal pad on the heat sink module. Also what do you mean by the top and bottom heat sinks. Is there one below the CPU? I used a Bergquist A3000 gap pad (0.02") between the heat sink assembly and keyboard, which helped reduce the temp of the CPU.

- Fan replacement in the I8100 requires an almost
- total disassembly of the notebook. The fans
- themselves are easy to get to once you remove the
- top cover and keyboard but the fan's wiring is
- plugged into the bottom of the main board, so you

- I took my time changing the fans in my I8100 and
