It's an 8200... I've done my research here and found out that I'm out of luck with Crystal. Looks like the Creative Extigy is next on my purchase list!!
Should have done better research on the notebook before I bought it although I love it in spite of this one shortcoming.
I want to add a number of search terms to this string, so that the next person won't spend 2 hours finding this answer! "line in recording" "Inspiron 8200" "line in record" "record line in" "recording line in". I'm 3weeks from being an electronics technologist, so I plan to ask th moderator who responded earlier for a more detailed description of what prevents this operation. Most users won't notice this shortcoming, but I did, almost a year after I got my 8200! What I had wanted to do was play a song through a device I've made, and run spectrum analysis on the output of that device (It's an Equalizer) which obviously requires completely independent playback and record.
I'm about to make another post. In regard to this issue. the title will be "Inspiron 8200, Recording Line In". It turns out that You Can record the line in!!!
