I'm not 100% sure that this is the cause of your observations, but in the BIOS, you can select the brightness of the screen when the unit is plugged in or using batteries.

On AC and On Battery LCD Brightness settings are remembered seperatly. setting one doesn't change the other.

Thank you for that. So where do you set these settings?? If it's the Bios, how about telling me how to access that? :)

To access BIOS, press F2 with the Dell bootup screen.

BIOS access is unneeded for this. FN+UP/DOWN Up=Brigher Down=Dimmer

FN key and up/down arrows. see the Sun icon in blue on them? thats the indicator for Brightness, unfortuantly i haven't found a Contrast function yet, doubtfull there is one. you can adjust it on the  fly as you need. dim room you don't need the screen as bright.
