NMM HyperV Backup Single VHD
Hi folks,
I have a virtual machine with two vhd files, vhd1 and vhd2.
Vhd1 is installed the operacional system, another vhd2 is the data files.
I want do backup virtual machine only with vhd1, I want that the Netwoker bypass vhd2, I dont need backup vhd2.
It's possible?
Thanks,
Alessandro.

Two methods:
1. Temporally detach vhd2 from the vm before backing up. After backup finished, attach it back.
2. Backup vhd1 as a normal file.

It's possible do without detach vhd2, create a directive to skip vhd2?

Hi Alessandro,
You can just specify the saveset for the file/VM you want to backup, no need to set the writer level saveset.
Please refer to the documentation for further information but, for example, if I understood correctly this id what you want to backup.
First gather all the valid savesets on Hyper-V host as follows:
• If the Hyper-V Server is not on a cluster virtual host, type:
nsrsnap_vss_save -?
• If the Hyper-V Server is on a cluster virtual host, type:
nsrsnap_vss_save -s -?
Then, depending on the output you can configure the savesets accordingly.
See an example from documentation:
NMM supports proxy backup for virtual machines. Virtual machine-only save sets can be specified in a proxy backup group:
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\virtual_machine_name_1
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\virtual_machine_name_2
The Microsoft Hyper-V save set and configuration file (Initial Store) save set cannot be specified in a proxy backup group:
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\Initial Store
Note: Replace Initial Store with Host Component for Windows Server 2012.
Example: APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\Host Component
Thank you,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for information. These steps I already executed. Follows my configuration in the save set:
APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\Test
This virtual machine have two vhd files attached.
I need to do backup of virtual machine "Test" only with one vhd, without detach second vhd.
It's possible?
Thanks,
Alessandro.

Hello Alessandro,
Sorry I misunderstood. I'm afraid that is not possible, the lower level you can be backing up is the VM level, so you would need to backup the entire "Test" VM.
If you run the saveset query (nsrsnap_vss_save -v -?) you will see there the possible configurations.
Thank you,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
We have some VMs that have multiple .vhds associated with them that are storing data
and I would like to backup the VM, but only the system .vhd.
I need to do backup of virtual machine with BRSPTESTE_C_System.vhd and skip BRSPTESTE_E_Data.vhd.
Image in attachment with the configuration of VM.
Thanks,
Alessandro.

Hi,
Follows link with some instructions, but don't work with NMM HyperV. I believe that work only Microsoft DPM.
Backing up a VM with multiple vhds attached (Network Steve Forum)
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
Add a Multi_SZ string and include the files to exclude - VSV, bin and the vhd file you want to exclude.
Add another reg key to enable this exclusion:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\HonorFilesNotToBackup
I need to do this in NMM, it´s possible?
Thanks,
Alessandro.
