It sound like the HDD is starting to fail, or has failed/died. Have you try a repair install??? I would just install another (new if you have one laying around) HDD and see if you can load the OS on it and if the problem comes back. If that solves the problem then you know it's the drive. If it doesn't fix the problem then you will need to run the Dell diagnostic program on  it and find out which piece of hardware is at fault.

I will try both of those suggestions, I was just informed of the Dell Repair using the installation discs ( which I will obviously need to request from the user I'm helping) and I will attempt to run a diagnostic to see if I cant get a better handle on whats happened to the computer....I think I was duped into a bigger problem than what I was originally informed.
