andych82, i too am wondering about the power supply issues.  I am only running the 6800 128MB (non GT) and am worried as well that I'm going to kill my power supply in a short amount of time.  I'm thinking about switching over to the 9800pro if that's better for it.

Also andy, how do I go about making sure agp fast write is disabled?  In RivaTuner should I just set the value of AGPFW to 0?  It currently has no value so how do I check to see if it is even enabled right now?  Thanks, I haven't used rivatuner before.

Great guys!

So far it seems like there is a better chance to succeed with the 6800GT over X800 with the original 250W PSU.

Haven't yet seen any problems for those with a new PSU.

Keep up the good work!

Hi,

meanwhile I checked the X800 Pro in my 8100 using an external power supply - same story, the 8100 freezes just before booting up Windows XP. Now I definitely know it's not the power supply... That was my last try, I'll start configuring a new system now and the Dell will become a very nice office machine. No gaming will disturb it's peaceful life in the near future. :-)

Cheers
Uli

Great news for 8300 owners thinking of upgrading gfx card

Successful Story!

Dell 8300
Original 250W PSU

Galaxy Geforce 6800GT runs great!

(However further over clocking with the card is NOT recommended - I tried that using Powerstrip 3.5 and the card freezed during 3D Mark 03 Test)

I upgraded my 8300 with original 250w PSU to  a Geforce 6800 standard 128mb card and it runs like a dream.

Didnt want to risk overloading PSU by having the 256mb GT version...but it seems plenty of you took a chance &have GT's running just fine in your Dimensions  :)

I am running Doom 3 on high settings at a resolution of 1280 x1024 and everything looks peachy ...so can definitley reccommend these new 6800 cards...big improvement from the Radeon 9800 pro I had installed.

Hey andych82,

I dissable the AGP fast write as you said and it was horrible.

I wonder if my motherboard can't handle the card. Will fool around with Riva Tuner to see if I can tweek it more.

How many went to Intel and update their chipset driver?

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=816

I tried with no luck...

Well, thats the thing.  I bought an 8400 with the X300SE.  It hasn't gotten here yet, so I don't know.

I bought the X800 from a guy at work, who pulled it from his CPU, so I dont know.

Hey Everyone,

I have a borderline success story with a Dell Dimension 8100 and a PNY GeForce 6800GT last night. I upgraded from an MX-440 and have to say I have no regrets so far. In Doom 3, the time demo is registering 40-42 FPS at 1600x1200, 2xAF on High Detail. On FarCry, I have everything cranked up to the max and it still plays extremely well. I didnt know how much detail in that game I was missing.

The only thing that worries me is that when I had the computer on for a while last night, for some reason I think the onboard NIC want responding anymore and when i went to reboot I got the blue screen. The last thing I did last night was update the video driver from 61.76 to 61.77. We'll see what happens tonight.

Here are my specs:

Dell Dimension 8100

Windows XP Professional

330 Watt Dell Stock PSU

Pentium-4 3.0 GHZ 400 MHz FSB a'la Powerleap

1Gig PC-800 RDRam (4 Dimms)

PNY GeForce 6800GT Video Card

Lite-On 12x DVD Burner

TDK CD-R/RW Drive

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card

ATI TV Wonder VE TV PCI Tuner Card

Adaptec FireWire PCI Card

Seagate 200GB HD

Western Digital 160 GB HD

I'm looking to squeeze another 3+ years out of this thing. There isnt much more I can do for it since its on its last legs, but to my surprise its performing admirably. But then again what do you expect from a 4+ year old machine, right?

I just put the BFG 6800GT overclocked card into my Dell 8250 w 250 watt PSU and it ROCKS!!!

Funny thing is the card is even quieter than my old 9700 Pro and is totally cool never getting above the stock temperature, even after hours of heavy gaming.

I loved my old 9700 but the extra 4 pipelines over the x800, the support for smartshader 2.0, and the fact that the 6800 series is a brand new design compared to the old design based x800 (really a souped up 9800) really sold me on this card.

No problems whatsoever and I got a huge bost in FPS, especially in OGL.  With the new arcitecture of this card I expect some great improvement in future driver releases.

ChrisM,
You bring up a valid point which i seemed to have overlooked. I did stack the computer with a lot of add-ons so thats probably it. I'll leave it on most of the night tonight and see how it works out.

Thanks again.
