PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!! XPS screen goes completely black when Windows loads
The Radeon 9700 mobility driver will not let me choose the built-in LCD monitor of my Inspiron XPS as the primary monitor in the ATI control panel. It has set the primary up as a CRT monitor with no other monitors selectable,(Even though you can see the pictures of the other possible selections, you can't push the on-screen button that selects them and there is also a red X on the pics of the cables next to each selection). So when Windows loads, the screen goes black but when I connect a external CRT monitor I can see the desktop on the CRT screen. I have reinstalled the drivers that shipped with the XPS and downloaded and installed the newest drivers from this site but the drivers seem to be the problem. If I got to device manager and disable the ATI driver, the LCD screen works, but I won't be able to use the ATI control panel because the driver is disabled. ANY ideas on how to resolve this HUGE problem will be VERY helpful and appreciated. THX

Another thing I've been wondering about is when I diable the 9700 mobility driver do I still get the same performance from the video card minus the control panel as I would with the driver funtioning properly? If the control panel is the only loss, I can live with that. Also, is there possibly another driver that will work as a substitute?

Hello Predator-1,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum,
Check the reed switch that is located on the lcd hinge cover.(small pin located above the power button) Make sure that its not stuck or bent.
Thanks,

I've tried lower resolutions like 800x600 but that didn't work. I'm not completely sure about the refresh rate but I can't change it if I wanted to. VERY, VERY FRUSTRATING!
