thanks for your response. one day, it was just gone when I went to adjust the borders of the touch pad. the original CD from Dell was used to re-install the drivers. yes, the tabs are all gone and only 'mouse' type tabs remain. any ideas would be appreciated.
Well I would try uninstalling ´the mouse and touch pad in device manager,leave the mouse off.Reboot-it will want to install the touch pad.pick ´have disk´,maybe...

did not install mouse driver on purpose, but used a regular mouse for a couple of days. got the usual 'new hardware found'.
