Hi Kipp,

I looked at the service manual & it doesn't appear there should be a problem. I looked up that WD drive & it looks like it comes with cloning software, so you should be able to clone the drive as well (assuming you have an adapter to connect both SSDs to the system at once).

I've re-imaged my Alienware & Inspiron laptop at least 6 times each and never had a problem with Windows 10 activating. Microsoft has gotten pretty good about re-authenticating Windows for commonly replaced/upgraded parts (RAM, HDD/SSD, GPUs). If you are logged into your Microsoft account you definitely won't have a problem.

Let us know if we can help further!

Kipp1985,

You can upgrade to the larger drive. The system will also be able to authenticate the Windows 10 product key once you install. Below are the Storage specs for your computer.

Dear Jesse,

I own the same G7 7590 laptop.  The service manual mentions that there is only one M2 slot PCIe NVMe 3x2 Class 35.  How and where on the motherboard is the other M2 slot PCIe NVMe 3x4 Class 40 that you mentioned in your post to Kipp1985?

Another question: The laptop came with the Toshiba 128GB NVMe drive.  Running Disk benchmark (CrystalDIskMark 6.0) it is giving me a very low Write Sequential speed of 120MB/s, when it should be around 600MB/s according to Toshiba website.  Do you know what could be the problem?  Note: Dell Technical Support could not help.  I called them twice wasting 3 hours.

Thx.

Hassan

Dear Jesse,

I already have the service manual for the 7590 G7 laptop.  Please point out to me where in this manual (which page) does it say that the 7590 has two M2 SSD slots, because I sure can't find it! in the manual and the motherboard doesn't seem to have two M2 SSD slots.

I also had already downloaded and installed the latest SSD drive firmware, but there is no change the drive poor performance.

Regards.

well if you have the service manual you should dissemble enough to see what you actually have. mine came with a 512gb 2230 card. I moved it to the 2230 slot and removed the short adapter from the 2280 slot and install my Samsung 970 EVO the use Macrium Reflect Free to clone the old 512 to the new 1TB adjusting the partitions to what I wanted setting up the clone. Ran the clone booted up all was good so I put the bottom back on, done. I now have 1.5 TB of extremely fast storage.

MHO stick with Samsung NVME M.2 SSD their top of the line for very good reasons!!2019-05-24_23-33-31.png

Hello, excuse my ignorance, I purchased a G7 7590 with a single 512Gb SSD also. I removed the back to add another SSD in the available space only to discover there isn't a cradle supplied or a cable from the motherboard to a potential 2nd drive. I was under the impression if a unit was supplied with only 1 SSD, there was a cable etc supplied, but there's just a square empty hole! Can someone tell me where one could get a cable from, I think it's called an interposer? Probably need a cradle/screws too. DELL spare parts are hopeless, seems they don't sell them at all, except in specific units. any advice from anyone would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Dell Community  @Andy Gee

This is from a "Chat" that I recently had looking for apart that I could not find on-line.

Agent (TIP_Sabrina V): "Unfortunately, not all spare parts are view-able on-line since we have another internal and restricted sales tool we are using.

I'm hoping you can answer a few questions for me.   I ordered a custom G7 15 7590.  I ordered the intermediate level unit ($1449), but downgraded the SSD to 256 with 1Tb hard drive.    In the future I would like to upgrade the SSD to 512 (or more) and the RAM to 24G or more.   Can you tell me the limits of up-gradeability for the SSD, RAM, and Hard Drive?

Once you get your service tag number you can download your Service Manual there you'll get all your answers.

SSD you should be able to go as far as 2TB no problem.  Providing you have an M.2  2280 NVME Slot Look at the Samsung 970 evo line

Hard Drive I think there now making 4TB in 9mm thick 2.5 notebook drive Google should tell you how big and how many. Assuming that you have a 9mm thick 2.5 notebook hard drive now? Not really up on hard drives since I don't use them in my notebooks Remember you can also replace that hard drive with a 2.5 SATA SSD Have a look at the Samsung 960 Evo line. Maybe that's where I got the 4TB from these 960's are only 7mm thick.

Ram you'll have to see how they set up what you ordered you may or may not have any empty slots, However that shouldn't prevent you from purchasing matching pairs for what every RAM you think you need. Seems to me that unless your running a lot of VM anything more than 16GB is pretty much a waste of RAM. MHO

hi @DELL-Jesse L ! if i disconnect my internal m.2 128gb ssd and connect my new samsung 970 evo 1tb ssd will the system be able to self authenticate and install windows to the new SSD? do i need to disconnect my internal HDD to ensure it installs to the correct drive?

No, you would need to Clone first. If you watch the video I posted it shows clearly that both drives need to be connected to accomplish this. With 2  m.w NVME drives if you don't have 2 slots you will need to

1. Purchase M2. NVME to USB adapter or external case

2. Use an external hard drive.  Use the MR Software to Create a full disk image of your current SSD then remove it and install your new SSD then restore the image you created to the new SSD

Either way will work,  if you don't feel comfortable doing either you should have a computer shop do it for you.

If that is what you want to do go for it.  Much easier to just clone

cloning was giving me issues, stating i had to bring windows into a PE environment, and i could use the fresh install anyways. now i’m having issues getting a valid windows product key on my new ssd
