Question about adding IDE drive to SCSI 1600SC
Currently I am running a 1600SC with dual Xeon 2.4GHz and the 15k RPM, 18GB Cheetah SCSI drive. I am looking to add a 5400 RPM, 40GB IDE drive for storage/backups of the SCSI disk to this 1600SC. I'd like to hear from people who've done this and get any advice they might be willing to share about their experience. Years ago I remember having a SCSI workstation and reading on a few forums how adding IDE drives to the setup caused nothing but problems, including the inability for the system to boot the SCSI drives.
What is the "right way" to do this? What are the BIOS settings? Even though I know theoretically it shouldn't, did adding the IDE for storage only slow the system down? Anyone have problems with doing it that led them to go back to the SCSI only setup?

Hi,
Yeah, it will try to boot to the IDE drive, no way to stop it from doing that.

Hi,
You will get the "press F1 to retry boot or F2 to enter system setup" message. you would need to format and partition the IDE drive then copy your boot.ini osloader and 1 other file for NT to be able to boot, or use a fault tolerant boot floppy. Microsoft technet should have articles that details how this may be done. you may have to edit the boot.ini as with the addition of the IDE drive the logical partition of the O/S will have changed.
Because of this, your system reliability is lower, if EITHER disk system fails, you will not be able to boot. That is why Dell does not recommend that the systems be operated with a mix of SCSI and IDE drives.
