Area 51 R7 is weeks away from being discontinued so there should some good deals on it this black friday season.  Looking at the current sale price on Dell you should probably be able to get the setup you mentioned now for around $3,000 -$3,100 either directly through dell chat or in combo with cb, which is more than I would pay if interested in it (considering the price for which a comparable setup could be had if building yourself).  And on that note that the 2920x is the entry level threadripper and can be had new for $270 from rebutable b&m/online retailers currently if building your own computer, probably due to the release of third generation threadrippers later this month.

The Aliens might cut some minor corners, but over-all, is a powerful system.

Unless you are prepared to take-on full responsibility for an expensive liquid-cooled custom-build (and see it through to the successful end) ...

... or have someone build it for you (if your budget is high) ...

... you could do a lot worse when it comes to a performance retail pre-built desktop. Just look around. What else do you see? Go ahead, you can mention it here. Compare apples-to-apples.

Challenge accepted!

...

I lost!

So I went to Origin PC's configurator to punch in similar config:

Threadripper 2920X

16GB

2080 Ti

1GB Evo 2 Plus SSD

>$4k

My 2 cents is to hold off purchase due to HEDT processor price war. But with holiday sales kicking off, it can be tough hoping not to pass on best price for the season/ year.

Thanks for the advice! I got the 2950X with GeForce 2080Ti and 16mb RAM (plus other bits) for £1,600, which looks like nearly 50% off the RRP (in the U.K. at least). Bit gutted I lost out on the Area 51 Intel with the i9-9900X (ordered and paid for, waited 3 weeks, then they cancelled due to stock shortage).  Lots of people on gaming forums are very dismissive of the AMD TR processors, but I’m hoping my ‘real world’ experience won’t see much difference.  Just got to hope they deliver the thing now!!
