RAID drive in foreign configuration

IMG_0403.jpgIMG_0399.jpgIMG_0400.jpgIMG_0401.jpgIMG_0402.jpgAll of a sudden, one of the drive in PowerEdge R720xd RAID (6) has gone foreign. On boot, following message is presented - "Foreign configuration(s) found on adapter..." In the "Foreign View" under BIOS Configuration Utility, the drive that went Foreign is shown as missing. I would like to remove the foreign HDD (as it has predicted failure) and build the new HDD as the part of existing array (as it should have been). So my questions are:

  • How should I replace the foreign HDD with new HDD (hot swap??)
  • Should I import foreign configuration (as it seems correct)?

Remember, I don't want to mess up existing array.

Thethakuri,

The only additional steps you would have had to do is if the predicted failure (foreign) was still online, since it is offline then it would be the same as any other failed hdd when replacing.

Hope this helps

Hi Chris,

Are you suggesting I just hot swap the predicted failure (foreign) hdd and let it rebuild? Will that clear the foreign configuration warning or should I do anything about it? As you can see, currently that drive is shown missing in the current configuration. Its just that these RAID issues are really touchy and I don't want to mess up anything.

Thanks

If you're able access the OS and data then you will NOT want to import the foreign, you would want to clear it. Clear the foreign, if it doesn't itself when the drive is removed, and rebuild with the replacement.

Thanks Chris.

Yes, I'm able to access OS and Data. So I should just hot swap the foreign HDD and let it rebuild?

Remove it and see if the foreign remains, if so then clear it prior to rebuilding.
