XPS 8910, Rear USB 3.0 Ports not working

we noticed that the Rear USB 3.0 Ports on are XPS8910 are not Communicating, we plug in a USB voltage tester it shows 5.03V, we unstalled  divers in device manager but it did not help,

Version of Windows?

Are the US3.0 ports completely dead or will a USB2 device work?

Do the 4 front USB3.0 ports work? And what about the one rear USB3.1 port (first on the left)?

What drivers did you uninstall? And did Windows automatically reinstall them?

Is anything marked in Device Manager as "unknown" or with an X or !  ?

You could try reinstalling the chipset driver

You could also try clearing BIOS:

  1. Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy down all current BIOS settings
  3. Power off, unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Reinstall the battery (Time for fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2)
  8. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  9. Reboot

Hi, Ron Sorry for the Delay  I have attached a screenshot of the device manager and the Answers

The version of Windows? Windows 10

Are the US3.0 ports completely dead or will a USB2 device work? just Confirmed that only the 2 left USB 3.0 and 2.0 don't work they have Power but no communication with devices 

 

the 4 front USB3.0 ports work? And what about the one rear USB3.1 port (first on the left)? All front 4 USB 3.0 Ports Work but the rear  left USB 3.0 and 2.0 Don't work

@sierra1010 We cannot view you image until it is approved. When you stated that in the rear of the PC the two left USB 3.0 ports don't work do you mean the USB 3.1 port and the USB 3.1 Type-C port don't work and the three USB 3.0 ports do work? I just want to make sure you realize there are USB 3.1 ports.

@Vic384  Thanks for the reply, I was mistaking it was the Rear Left USB 3.1 and the  Left USB 2.0 only,  the USB 3.1 Type-C port works fine it's the two left Type-A USB, they have power but windows 10 does not detect any devices

Perhaps it will be clearer to me when I can see your pictures. There has been an issue with the USB ports on the XPS 8910 that has been discussed in this forum. In some cases the USB 2.0 ports have failed and Dell has replaced the motherboards if they were under warranty. I have seen this problem on my XPS 8910, but my ports did not fail completely just stopped working intermittently. To ensure that the ports do not fail, I use a powered USB hub on the USB 2.0 port and connect my keyboard and mouse to the hub.

Perhaps I was not clear, I did not want to imply that a powered hub would make failed port work again, only that a powered hub would protect a port from failing. There was some speculation in this forum that the ports, especially the USB 2.0 ports, failed because they were overstressed from supplying power to USB devices. Normally the USB ports should be able to handle this, but in the case of the XPS 8910 it was a problem.

Thank you for the help the photos should be on the forums, I also tested powered USB HUB on the one of the USB that does not communicate, and it does not help

Microsoft has various security and feature update bugs, which broke audio, USB devices/core inputs including cameras, keyboards, and mice. ASMEDIA has security issue so microsoft updates DELIBERATELY DISABLE These ports. This update fixes security vulnerabilities in the ASMedia xHCI (USB3) firmware.

What you have to do is remove the ASMEDIA USB3 drivers  INTEL Chipset Drivers and REINSTALL the Chipset then OEM drivers.

ASMedia drivers only affect the USB 3.1 ports. If Microsoft updates disables USB ports you would expect that it would disable all the ports not just some of them, OP said only the rear left USB 3.0 and 2.0 port don't work and that all front USB 3.0 ports work.

I bought a 4 year extended warranty and went threw 5 MB's not counting the original failed board.  Dell is building garbage now.  Not only do the USB 2.0 ports and 3.0 ports fail, I had the integrated sound fail on 2 of the boards.  The only thing you can do is install USB port expansion cards. The expansion slots on the PCI bus seem to last and are the only option.  The refurbished cards are no better and in many cases fail quicker and some fail in the integrated ethernet port.  I get customers all the time with this garbage board with failed ports.  I stopped buying Dells and canceled my personal and business accounts!  I am over paying Dell for garbage parts from Dell.  The only dependable thing I have found to do with these machines is to convert them into NAS machines for home and small business.

That’s quite funny I have the exact same computer and if your going from the outside in where the 4- 3.1 ports are located. Not the 1st port  but the 2nd port has serious issues. Even plugging something into it will cause the computer to crash. I was thinking it could be a bad solder job but you have the same issue has me second guessing that theory!
