The graphics for volume control *and* the ability to eject the disk from the fn-f10 come from the Dell Quickset utilities. I downloaded version 1.2.5 from the Dell support pages to re-enable the disk eject, once I figured out that was what was needed.

I posted this somehere else but here may be a better place.  My 600m slows down dramatically when running on battery.  Download speed goes from 90kbs to 6kbs for exactly the same download when i unplug it (i tested it on a download of WMP 9.0).  Websurfing also is painfully slow when unplugged and resumes at normal speed immediately when plugged.  I use a 11b wireless router.

I tried the following:

- disabled speedstep on the Bios (although i gather it is useless, but i tried anyway)

- Played with the power options in XP (including using maximum performance etc...)

- Changed the powerplay setting on the ATI control panel (should have nothing to do with download speed but i tried anyway).

- Called tech support who said they would call me back and did not.

If i can't fix the problem, i think i will return this otherwise fine machine.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I don't know the answers you are looking for but

"disabled speedstep on the Bios (although i gather it is useless, but i tried anyway)"

is not a good Idea. I have read reports that if you disable it it will only run at the slower speed.

there is also a patch for speedstep. Do a search on the forum there is lots of info on it.

APM is a power management feature. Hibernate is an application layer feature. They are not at all the same thing. Though I didn't know about the "shift" thing....

Pretty much Dells false information effects people expect to be able to suspend to disk reguardless of OS.

Best wishes,

Disabling speedstep forces the cpu to throttle down  to something around 600mhz and stays there, on ac or battery. Re-enable it. Set your power scheme to "Home/Office Desk", this allows full cpu speed on ac power and stepping speed (cpu speed depending on load) on battery.

The keys at the top are keyboard keys. You can control them using keyboard calls. I was referring to having a knob vs keyboard.

Best wish,

Even with Speedstep running and regardless of the power management setting (tried them all), my 600m surfing is very slow while on wireless internet access when running on battery. The second it is plugged back in, it resumes at normal speed.

Thank you

Hey guys, I plan on getting a 600m tomorrow 5/28. I have a couple questions:

1. 1.3 vs 1.4 is the price worth the upgrade to 1.4Ghz? I'm getting it with 64MB Radeon so price is important.

2. Dual battery, I plan on getting a floppy drive too. Does the 600m support dual battery with the floppy in?

3. Is the videocard on the 600m upgradable?

Since nobody has replied yet.. I'll try..

1. I'd say stick with the 1.3, can't be that much increase in performance on the 1.4.

2. I don't think that you can have two batteries and the floppy all in at once. But I can't imagine that you would always want your floppy drive inserted in  your notebook.

3. I don't know the answer to your last question. I would assume it is not upgradable. But thats only an uneducated guess.

i just ordered a 600m two days ago and i can't wait for it to get here. i opted for the 1.3 ghz proc because 1) it was cheaper, and 2) because i hear it's upgradable. as far as the battery thing goes, i've been scouring the pics and i only see one modular bay. i thought there was two but can anyone confirm this? also, i hear the video card is built onto the mobo. that might make upgrading the video card very hard if not impossible (i dunno, i'm no expert). i guess i won't be able to really answer any questions until i get it in about two weeks (is that how long it usually takes?) until then, ciao!

In theory the Proc is upgradable, that is what Intel stated, but who knows what mods Dell has done

Same goes for the vidoe card, but I think Dell has to come out with a vid card that will fit

1. You wont notice the difference between 1.3 and 1.4ghz.

2. No the 600m has 1 media bay, you can run two batteries and use the floppy drive externally with a cable.

3. I don't think so, I think it is integrated onto the mobo. Check out the service manual online, no info on removing the video card, doesn't even show you where it is.

How about from 1.3 GHz to 1.6 GHz? Is there a big difference? I'm debating whether to go with the Pentium-M 1.3 vs. a Pentium 4-M 2.2. From what I read, it seems that the computing experience with different applications will be similar.

Well right now the general rule of thumb is to add 600-800mhz to the Pentium M speed to give you the equivelant Pentium 4 speed. For example the 1.3ghz Pentium M is roughly the same speed as a 2.0ghz P4, and the 1.6ghz Pentium M is roughly the same speed as a 2.4ghz P4. Would you notice a difference between 2 and 2.4ghz? Only in the most demanding applications and benchmarks, everyday use, no.

IMO not worth the extra $500+

because in about 6 months that proc is going to be not high end anymore, and 1.3 and 1.6 wont be a huge difference

Now if you are tlaking 1.3 and 2.0 that is a difference, those are suppose to be out end of year or first quarter 2004
