No, the 2.5 inch HHD/SSD bay is an SATA-600 interface, NVMe is not supported.Only the M.2 SSD connection supports PCIe NVMe SSD's!

Yes but be aware the the maximum R/W speeds will be around 1800Mb/s, because the M.2 slot supports 'only' 2 lane PCIe. In other words: Don't not buy a SSD because of it's high (e.g. ~3400 Mb/s) R/W speeds!

Just looking for something quicker than the 5400rpm SATA 1TB drive that came with the laptop.
I find it can be slow at times considering the laptop has 8GB Ram and i5-8250U Intel processor.

I'm very surprise 2.5-inch drive (7200 rpm) isn't Maximum configuration supported for your Dell computer.
