David,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Unfortunately, the only sure way to determine if the problem is with the AC adapter, or the motherboard is to try another AC adapter.  It is most likely a problem with the adapter, or with the power connector on the system.

it seems the AC power connector, over time, wiggles loose from the MB. You might try wiggling the cord while its connected to see if you can switch it from main to battery that way.

Thanks for the replies. In the end, although the connector on my first adaptor seemed to make contact no longer, and I had to buy a new one (the voltage was in fact ok), it needed a chip replacing on the mother board. Expensive? Not really- 200 kuai - about £16- in China! Take it in, old part so takes a week to get it, then- fixed!
