The HDMI port on the Camcorder is an output port. The HDMI port on the HDMI port on the XPS 8300 is also an output port, so it will not work. You need a capture card.

The manual does not account for a discrete graphics card.

NO OS stated,  XP, Vista, w7/w8,w10?  OS matters because old cards have no w10 support, and the reverse !

connecting HDMI out to HDMI out will never work.

yes you need a capture card, but are very hard find, cheap very expensive.

no camera stated at all so all outputs  it  has , can not be known by me.  ( does it have composite video out?)

most are horrible resolution nobody wants now,  I have one parked , one of the last sony, made.. now junk  class.

why not just buy a dirt cheap webcam,  vast exits, even for 10 bucks,  a fraction of any ADC capture card .

$10 1600*1200 resoluotion (you do get what you pay for)

 at walmart.

wash hands before and after,

there 2 solutions one , capture card and one 10x cheaper a webcam

The manual may have errors, but it is not useless. The manual was produced when the PC was produced. You can't expect an updated or new manual for an old PC.

The OP did not need to tell us the OS in order to answer his question about making a hardware connection with his camcorder.
