bigdog517,

It sounds like a processor issue. Try starting your system up without the harddrive in, if the harddrive is the problem you should still be able to get into the bios.

If your system will not power on try some or all of the following.

>Remove the ac adapter and the battery for two minutes then reconnect the ac adapter and try powering the system up.

>Remove the ac adapter, the battery, and the harddrive then put the harddrive back in and try it on ac power only.

>Try starting the system without the harddrive in the system.

>Remove hardware components one at a time and see if the system will start after that.

If the system will not power up with a certain hardware component install then that component may be faulty.

If the system will not power on no matter what, then the processor or motherboard may be faulty.

I had the exact same problem (Inspiron 8000 would not boot) in August 2003. It was out of warranty, so I paid $500 for replacement motherboard which changed nothing so I sent it back. I then paid $500 for a replacement CPU which also changed nothing so I sent it back.

Luckily the day after the original failure I went out and bought a Gateway laptop (this was before they closed all their stores). The Dell is now gathering dust.

Did your Dell meet a happier fate? Is there any market for Dell corpses? I don't have the time or patience to ebay-away all the bits and pieces that probably do work, such as flatscreen, HDD, FDD, DVD, DIMMs, battery, power block, etc.

I had the same exact problem twice on my Dell Inspiron 8000. Last night I was in the middle of watching a DVD and 3/4ths of the way through it the system shut itself off, and would not start up. Both my installed batteries were fine also. I tried plugging it in, no dice... I removed everything... HD, RAM, Mini-PCI, Both batteries, DVD Drive tested and still nothing... I then reassembled it all and waited 5 minutes without the batteries or the ac adapter plugged in. I held down the power button for 5 seconds, much like I do with a desktop system to remove any residual charge in the power supply. A few minutes later I tried to power it on and it finally worked! Do you think this could be an over-heating problem? Maybe the DVD playing for so long caused the system to overheat, and I had to wait for it to cool down to power up? I have the lastest bios (A23) and latest firmware for my devices. My warranty was up last June so I'd rather hope there is an easy fix...

I have the Same problem.  No power no lights nothing.  The Batteries are new.  It did this a couple of weeks ago but than suddenly started working again.  Now its dead..dead   What part or parts would cause this.  I have replaced the motherboard and video card in the past so I can fix it if I knew what was causing it.  This is a new one for me.

I fixed it by resetting the DC board.  It was loose.  It is located at the palm side of the video card and seats into the MoBoard
