This can't be true, but yes it is.  My old 1995 IBM has better texts and photo images than my new Dell inspiron 8500, these companies Dell or Microsoft should have had a solution for this problem  before they sold to us.   I don't want to mess around with the registry and I don''t know how. Mad!

To Dien

IF your text and images are not as good in your Dell 8500 in programs OTHER than Internet Explorer then I suggest you got a 'lemon'. If your comments are because of the way things look in Internet Explorer then find someone who can make this very simple registry change or just use another browser. Yes in a perfect world all computers would run everything perfectly, and yes Dell should have known about this problem with Internet Explorer (one which is easily fixed) but my friend this in not a perfect world.

Good Luck!

This forum was tremendously helpful.  One week with Dell tech support and nada.  I recommend doing the RegEdit and the settings described by qforyou
on page 7.  -Tim

guugoo, you're absolutely positive that you did the Registry edit correctly?

Is Internet Explorer the only place you experience fuzzy images?  Are you using the maximum resolution for your screen?

hi....ya...i double checked the registry settings and it is set to zero. and this is happening only in IE. I see that others have benefitted from this change but am wondering why it is not working for me...any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

guugoo, I am also still having problems after the regedit. I have been using Mozilla and Netscape, but would like to be able to use IE as well.

Onehuman, my problems are in IE only. Any further suggestions?

found this article on a website...hope this helps some:

As laptop users and other LCD owners are quickly realizing, Microsoft's ClearType technology in Windows XP really makes a big difference for readability. But the this feature is enabled on a per-user basis in Windows XP, so you can't see the effect on the Welcome screen; it only appears after you logon.

But you can fix that. Fire up the Registry Editor and look for the following keys:

(default user) HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothing (String Value)
HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ FontSmoothingType (Hexadecimal DWORD Value)

Make sure both of these values are set to 2 and you'll have ClearType enabled on the Welcome screen and on each new user by default.

Setting the UseHR Registry entry to 0 (zero), is only if you want to use a DPI other than the standard 96 (e.g. the 120 DPI default being set and shipped on Dell laptops).

If you are using 96 DPI, and the optimal resolution (maximum), images should not appear fuzzy or unclear in Internet Explorer.  If they are, one possibilty is that IE is resizing images.  To disable this, in IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > "Advanced" tab > "Multimedia" section > uncheck "Enable Automatic Image Resizing" and click OK.

LCD screens are meant to be used at only one optimal resolution, which usually is the maximum resolution available.  Are you sure that is what you are using?  To check, right-click on a blank area of your Desktop and choose "Properties".  On the "Settings" tab, in the "Screen resolution" area, what is the slider set to?

GuuGoo,

When you go into the display properties setting what is the highest screen resolution you can select? What you want is the highest possible resolution you can select. 1024x768 sound a little low for newer laptops.

Sounded low to me also but just checked and this is the max resolution on some 5100 models. Not sure what GuuGoo's problem is.

Still having problems here too. I don't have a laptop, but a Precision 360. My registry fixes were not successful, and I have double checked to make certain that I did them correctly.

I also checked to see if image resize was on, and it is not enabled. Still have bad images, and it is on IE only. It seems as though there may be no fix, aside from running another browser.
