You could have tried clearing CMOS first, before the rollback.
If you have aftermarket RAM, there's always the possibility this was intentional.
Another thing to try if you don't have the oem stick would be removing 2 sticks and booting with 32gb, or 3 sticks and bootimg with 16g.
