savsmith,

If you are referring to the prompt asking you if the connection is still needed you can restore it by going to Tools|Internet Options|Connections tab. Click your connection then click "Settings" and on the next dialog click "Advanced." Check the items you wish applied and OK out.

Thanks for your response.  If I understand you correctly, when I get to Settings, Advanced, the box shown as "disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" is already checked.  I could see no other setting that appeared to have any bearing on the auto disconnect feature.  Perhaps I should be more concise about what I'm referring to.  When I click the "X" to close IE6, a box sometimes appear that offers two options.  One says stay connected, the other says disconnect now.  I think it also indicates if no action is taken, automatic disconnection will occur in a short period of time.  That is the feature that disappears from time to time.

I, too, see this happen on a random basis, both with my 8300 desktop running XP w/SP1 and my wife's 2650 laptop running XP w/SP1 (but, had same issue/quirk before I installed SP1 on it, too). I don't know of a solution as such. The fact this occurs randomly on both of our XP PC's leads me to believe it's just another of the quirks with XP.  As you noted, it's an annoyance more than anything else.

Info for this check box says;

"Specifies whether to automatically disconnect your modem when you have quit all Internet programs. This is useful if you are also using this connection for e-mail, chat rooms, or other Internet-based programs."

So do you have any other Internet programs running when you close IE
ie: OE or Messenger etc.

I think auto Windows Update will show an Icon in System Tray unless Customize has been set to never show.

This is probably an application, as noted above.

You may want to check if it is Windows Update (as it was in my case). When configured to automatically retrieve and install updates, it will try to access the internet when a connection is present and begin to download. If it has not finished when you close IE, it will not show you the prompt to disconnect or stay connected.

Regards,

Rick
